Tigers Win 4-3 in a Shootout
December 12, 2021 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Medicine Hat Tigers News Release
The Tigers headed to Red Deer to take on the Rebels on Saturday night. It was only the second of eight meetings between the two teams this season. The Tigers came away with a 4-2 victory in their first visit to Red Deer.
The Tigers power play unit went to work early and opened the scoring 5:04 into the first period. Oren Shtrom was the beneficiary of some nice passing from Oasiz Wiesblatt and Dru Krebs. Wiesblatt found Shtrom open on the left side of the net for his fourth of the season.
We'd have to wait until midway through the second period for another goal. Jace Weir evened the game up with a turn around slap shot from the blue line that found the top corner. The Rebels would add another goal late in the period to take a 2-1 lead heading into the third. Blake Stevenson hit Dallon Melin with a stretch pass that sent him away on a breakaway. Melin made a nice move and found the top corner for his second of the season.
Oren Shtrom would strike again 11 minutes into the third to even the game up at two apiece. The goaltender was able to stop Oasiz Wiesblatt's shot but Shtrom was there to tap in the loose rebound. Red Deer would respond quickly with a goal only 70 seconds later. Ben King was able to find Arshdeep Bains in front of the net with a pass from the corner. Bains was able to tap the puck into the net for his 12th of the campaign. The Tigers continued to fight for the tying goal as the clock wound down. With under a minute and a half remaining in the period Ashton Ferster was able to even it up with his seventh of the year. Ferster redirected Noah Danielson's shot through the Rebels netminder's five hole. Daniel Baker also picked up an assist on the game tying goal.
Neither team was able to score in overtime so we headed to a shootout to declare a winner. Garin Bjorklund stood tall in net and stopped all three Rebels shooters. Lukas Svejkovsky iced the game with a quick wrister that was the only goal scored in the shootout.
Garin Bjorklund (3-11-2-0) picked up the win in net for the Tigers. He saved 32 of the 35 shots he faced.
