Prince Albert Raiders News Release
Prince Albert, Sask. - The Prince Albert Raiders (9-12-1-1) erased a three-goal deficit, but fell 5-4 in overtime to the Swift Current Broncos (10-12-2-1) at the Art Hauser Centre on Tuesday night.
Ozzy Wiesblatt had a goal and two assists in the contest, while Carson Latimer and Sloan Stanick each chipped in a goal and an assist. Landon Kosior had a pair of helpers. Cale Sanders also scored for the Raiders in the loss.
The overtime loss snapped the Raiders' three-game winning streak, though they preserved their point streak which was extended to four games.
The Broncos got on the board first midway through the opening period. Brady Birnie chipped it off the wall at centre ice to spring Caleb Wyrostok on a breakaway. The Broncos forward snapped the shot over Tikhon Chaika's glove hand to make it 1-0.
Two minutes later, Grayson Burzynski extended Swift Current's lead. After fanning on his initial shot, he regrouped and got the puck to his backhand to tuck it past a downed Chaika to give the Broncos a 2-0 lead.
Early in the second period, the Broncos made it a three-goal game. Sam McGinley's centering pass from the right corner went off Nolan Allan's skate and past Chaika to put the Broncos ahead 3-0 1:09 into the frame.
The Raiders responded less than 30 seconds later. Latimer skated into a pass from Wiesblatt and went wide to the right. He found Stanick with a backdoor pass to tap home the Rapid City, Man. product's eighth of the season.
Swift Current restored their three-goal advantage during a period of four-on-four hockey in the middle of the second. Josh Filmon dropped a pass to Owen Pickering in the slot and Pickering fired a shot past Chaika to make it 4-1. The goal ended Chaika's night after making 10 saves in just over 30 minutes of action.
Before the end of the second, the Raiders got back within two. Kosior chipped a puck to Wiesblatt in the right corner of the zone. Behind the goal line, Wiesblatt caught goaltender Reid Dyck out of position and banked a shot in off the Broncos netminder for his sixth of the season.
Just 45 seconds into the third, Latimer cut the Raiders' deficit in half. Wiesblatt glided into the zone and drew the attention of both defenders. He made a saucer pass to spring Latimer behind the defence and the Ottawa Senators prospect snapped a shot short side on Dyck to make it a 4-3 game with his first as a Raider.
Shortly after the goal, Reece Vitelli almost tied things. He avoided a check at the blueline, then carried the puck into the centre of the zone. He fired a shot from the slot that beat Dyck, but found iron and stayed out.
The Raiders found the equalizer 8:55 into third. Kosior made a pass to Sanders at the top of the crease, who had his initial attempt stopped by Dyck. Sanders stuck with it and knocked home the rebound from the blue paint to tie things up at 4-4 with his fifth of the season.
Both teams traded chances in the final half of the third period, but were unable to pull ahead before heading to overtime.
In the extra frame, Josh Davies forced a turnover at the top of the Broncos' zone to set himself up on a breakaway. He fired a shot that beat Carter Serhyenko to end the game 2:11 into overtime.
Serhyenko made 13 saves in relief for the Raiders, allowing just the overtime goal. Dyck stopped 31 shots for the Broncos.
The Raiders are off until Friday night when they head to Regina to take on the Pats at the Brandt Centre. Game time is 7 p.m. Catch the game at The Rock And Iron Club House, Original Joe's, or watch on WHL Live on CHL TV.
The next Raiders' home game is on Saturday night when the Calgary Hitmen visit the Art Hauser Centre on Toque And Mitt Toss Night Presented By Canadian Tire. Puck drop is 7 p.m. Tickets are available at the Raiders Office and at SaskTix.ca.
