Portland Winterhawks News Release
Portland, Ore. - Teddy Bear Toss made its triumphant return on Saturday and the Portland Winterhawks made sure to deliver for the occasion, hammering the Spokane Chiefs 7-3 for a second win in as many nights over their rivals from eastern Washington.
There were plenty of goals in this tilt, but none more electrifying than Robbie Fromm-Delorme's tally at 7:17 of the first period. Fromm-Delorme grabbed a loose puck behind the net and wrapped it around into the net before Spokane's Manny Panghli before knew he was even there, triggering a flash flood of fluff that rained from the stands. In total, Winterhawks fans donated 7,531 teddy bears and other stuffed animals on Saturday night during the most unique goal celebration of the year.
After a brief break, there was still hockey to play, and Gabe Klassen understood the assignment. Klassen netted his 10th of the year on a similar play to Fromm-Delorme's goal, corralling a loose puck behind the net and banking it off of Panghi's paraphernalia to cap off the first-period scoring.
Spokane fought back early in the second period with an Erik Atchison tally at 1:28, but the Hawks continued to pour it on with goals from Cross Hanas and Jaydon Dureau separated by just over 30 seconds. Hanas took a pass around the back of the net and quickly spun out in front to slide the puck under Panghi's pad for a 3-1 Hawks lead, before Dureau potted a third-chance opportunity following a pair of chances for Tyson Kozak and Luca Cagnoni. The goal-filled second period rolled on as the Chiefs grabbed another thanks to Luke Toporowski, but Portland again had a response when Clay Hanus ripped one from the left circle over the shoulder of Mason Beaupit, who had entered the game in relief of Panghi.
Toporowski potted his second goal of the night at 6:50 of the third to get the Chiefs within a pair, but another goal apiece from Hanas and Hanus ensured Portland's victory. Hanas deflected Tyson Kozak's shot from the slot for his eighth of the year, while Hanus grabbed his sixth of the season to add the cherry on top at 11:56.
Dante Giannuzzi picked up a third consecutive win between the Portland pipes with 18 saves on 21 shots, while Spokane netminders Manny Panghli and Mason Beaupit combined for 36 saves in the loss.
The Winterhawks are back in action at the VMC on Tuesday, Dec. 14 against the Everett Silvertips.
