Spokane Chiefs News Release
Portland, Ore. - The Spokane Chiefs wrapped up their two-game stint in Portland with a 7-3 loss to the Winterhawks on Saturday night. It was Teddy Bear Toss night for the Hawks, as Robbie Fromm-Delorme sent them flying onto the ice with a goal at 7:17 in the first period.
Portland scored again halfway through the first and would hold on for the rest of the period to head into the break with a 2-0 lead.
Spokane came out ready to fight in the second period, as Las Vegas native Erik Atchison tapped in the first of three Chiefs power play goals at 1:28 off a rebound from Bear Hughes. The Winterhawks answered quickly with back-to-back goals from Cross Hanas and Jaydon Dureau at 3:23 and 4:02, respectively.
Seven minutes into the second, the Chiefs took advantage of a beautiful save from Mason Beaupit to move the puck down the ice to veteran forward Luke Toporowski, who shot a laser into the top right of the net to bring Spokane within two.
It didn't take long for Portland to widen the gap again, though, with Clay Hanus scoring at 15:20 to put the Winterhawks ahead 5-2 heading into the final frame.
Toporowski opened the third period with another power play goal at 6:02 to make it 5-3, but that'd be as close as the Chiefs got in this one. Two more Winterhawk goals (Tyson Kozak and Hanus) would seal the 7-3 Portland victory.
The Chiefs were outshot 43-21 and went 3-for-5 on the power play and 1-for-6 on the penalty kill.
Rookie netminder Manny Panghli started in goal for Spokane, turning aside 14 of 18 shots faced in 24 minutes played. Mason Beaupit came in to relieve him four minutes into the second period and denied 22 of 25 Portland shots.
Up next, the Chiefs return home to face these same Winterhawks on Friday, December 17 at 7:05 p.m. It will be Avista Poster Giveaway as the first 1,000 fans will receive a Chiefs poster courtesy of Avista Utilities.
