Tri-City ValleyCats News Release

NORWICH, CT - The Connecticut Tigers (21-19) defeated the Tri-City ValleyCats (22-18) by a final score of 2-1 Friday night at Dodd Stadium in Norwich, ending both the Tigers eight game losing streak and the 'Cats streak of five consecutive victories.

Pitching was the story as the Tigers shut down the New York-Penn League's best offense, only allowing four hits in the ballgame.

Gregory Soto started for Connecticut, and struck out six batters in five innings, while allowing just two hits.

Erasmo Pinales got the start for the ValleyCats, and hurled 4 1/3 innings of scoreless baseball while only allowing two hits.

The game was scoreless through five innings, until the Tigers got to the 'Cats in the bottom of the 6th, beginning with three consecutive extra-base hits.

Austin Athman and Daniel Pinero both tripled to score the Tigers first run, and an RBI double by Daniel Woodrow extended the lead to 2-0.

After a dropped third strike by catcher Jake Rogers put runners on the corners, the 'Cats escaped further trouble with a strike 'em-out, throw 'em-out double play, and a fly out to right.

The ValleyCats threatened in the ninth, cutting the lead to 2-1 after a lead-off walk to Marcos Almonte and an RBI double off the right field wall by Ronnie Dawson.

Taylor Jones then reached base on a dropped third strike, putting runners on the corners with nobody out. Carmen Benedetti came to the plate and lifted a shallow fly ball to the left fielder Victor Padron, who delivered a perfect throw to the plate to nab Dawson attempting to score the tying run.

With two outs and Jones on second, Spencer Johnson struck out looking to end the threat and the ballgame.

Plate Schmidt (1-0) and Mark Ecker (S, 4) combined to pitch four innings of relief for the Tigers, allowing just the one run in ninth, while striking out seven ValleyCats and allowing only two hits.

Sebastian Kessay was solid out of the pen for the 'Cats, fanning five Tigers batters through three shutout innings. Angelo Serrano (0-1) pitched in his first game since joining Tri-City from Greeneville, and suffered the loss.

Connecticut and Tri-City will meet again on Saturday night in the rubber match of the series at 7:05 p.m. RHP Edgardo Sandoval (0-2, 6.88) gets the start for the 'Cats, opposite LHP Austin Sodders (0-2, 3.63) of the Tigers.
