
Tigers Snap Eight Game Skid

NORWICH, CT - The Connecticut Tigers (21-19) snapped an eight-game losing streak with a 2-0 triumph over the Tri City ValleyCats, the win forces a rubber-game tomorrow night at 7:05 p.m. from Dodd Stadium.
The Tigers received a superb performance from Gregory Soto who pitched five scoreless innings, tying a season-low two hits and striking out a season-high six batters. Soto spotted his fastball throughout the ballgame and only walked one batter I his stint.
The Tigers scored in the sixth with three consecutive extra base hits to kick off the frame, Austin Athmann drilled a triple to right centerfield, his first of his professional career. Daniel Pinero followed suit with a triple of his own to centerfield to get the Tigers on the board 1-0. A couple pitches later Daniel Woodrow grounded a double down the right field line to bring in Pinero from third, Tigers led 2-0.
Clate Schmidt pitched one his best games of the year, throwing two scoreless frames, where he collected three strikeouts.
After a Mark Ecker lock down eighth inning, Ecker struggled to open the ninth inning. Leading 2-0, Ecker walked the leadoff man before an RBI double from Ronnie Dawson cut the lead to one. Taylor Jones then reached on a strikeout that got away from Mario Sanjur and advanced runners to first and third and no one out.
The play of the came from Victor Padron and Mario Sanjur, with the tying run at third, Carmen Benedetti lifted a shallow groundball to left field, Victor Padron made the catch and threw towards the plate. Sanjur made the catch and was barreled over by Ronnie Dawson. Sanjur held on to the baseball to complete the double play. One batter later, Ecker punched out Johnson looking to grab his fourth save of the year.
Offensively, Athmann and Pinero, with their triples tonight, have extended their hitting streaks to five games.
Connecticut goes for the series win tomorrow on Star Wars Night at Dodd Stadium. First pitch is slotted for 7:05 p.m.
