State College Spikes News Release

STATE COLLEGE, PA - Elier Rodriguez smashed a three-run homer in the third and keyed the State College Spikes' offensive assault in a 9-2 victory over the Williamsport Crosscutters on Friday night at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.

The win extended the Spikes' (27-13) New York-Penn League Pinckney Division lead over the Crosscutters (24-16) to three games, and gave State College a series victory over Williamsport in a meeting of teams with the two best records in the NYPL.

Rodriguez's home run to the right field bleachers, his second of the season, delighted a crowd of 4,041 fans and stretched the Spikes' lead to 6-2 in the third. The long ball drove in three of the seven runs against Williamsport starter Adonis Medina (4-1), who had yielded just five runs over 39 1/3 innings entering Friday night's game.

The Spikes jumped on the board in the first inning when Tommy Edman led off with a triple and scored on Mick Fennell's groundout. In the second, new Spike Yariel Gonzalez drove in a run with a sacrifice fly, and Edman brought in another with a single up the middle.

Following the Rodriguez blast, Vince Jackson then doubled in a run in the fourth for State College. One of four Williamsport errors then scored another Spikes run in the sixth, and Ryan McCarvel capped the scoring with his 25th run batted in of the year on a single in the same frame.

Williamsport plated both of its runs in the third on an Arquimedes Gamboa sacrifice fly and a wild pitch, but could not do any more damage against State College starter Steven Farinaro (5-0). Farinaro yielded just one earned run on six total hits and a walk over six innings to stay undefeated on the season. The right-hander also struck out three batters.

Medina took his first loss of the year for the Crosscutters, giving up seven runs, three of them earned, on six hits, two walks and a hit batsman. The native Dominican, who is currently ranked 16th on MLBPipeline's list of the top prospects in the Philadelphia Phillies system, struck out three batters.

David Martinelli collected three hits for the Crosscutters.

The Spikes and Crosscutters will finish up their three-game series on Saturday night with a 7:05 p.m. matchup at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. State College will send right-hander Ronnie Williams (4-2), the 22nd-ranked prospect in the Cardinals system according to MLBPipeline.com, to the mound.
