Black Bears Erase Multiple Deficits to Beat Doubledays

The Auburn Doubledays, Single-A Short Season affiliate of the Washington Nationals, fell to the West Virginia Black Bears, 6-2, on Friday evening. Outfielder Blake Perkins hit a home run for the Doubledays in the loss.

The Doubledays (17-23) scored first in the bottom of the third inning. With two outs, Perkins hit a solo home run to right field to put Auburn up 1-0.

The Black Bears (20-20) responded in the top of the sixth inning. Stephen Alemais and Clark Eagan both singled to put runners on first and second base. Austin Meadows flew out to left field for the first out of the inning. With Will Craig batting, Alemais and Eagan stole to put runners on second and third base. Craig followed with a sacrifice fly out to right field that scored Alemais to tie the game at one.

Auburn regained the lead in the bottom of the sixth inning. Perkins led off the inning with a walk. Jake Noll then singled to put runners on first and second. Nick Banks followed with a singled to right field that scored Perkins from second base to give the Doubledays a 2-1 advantage.

West Virginia took its first lead of the game in the eighth inning. With one out, a pitch hit Eagan. With Sandy Santos batting, Eagan stole second base. Santos then struck out. With Craig batting, a wild pitch allowed Eagan to move to third base. Craig then singled to left field to score Eagan and tie the game at two. With Albert Baur batting, Craig stole second base and advanced to third because of a throwing error by catcher Luis Vilorio. Baur doubled, and Craig scored to give the Black Bears a 3-2 lead.

The Black Bears extended their lead in the ninth inning. With two outs, Erik Forgione walked. Alemais then reached on an error to put runners on first and second. Eagan followed with a single to right field that scored Forgione and put West Virginia on top 4-2. During the play, Alemais moved to third base and Eagan advanced to second base on a throw home. Ty Moore then singled to right-center field, scoring Alemais and Eagan to extend the Black Bears' lead to four, 6-2.

The Doubledays and the Black Bears conclude their three-game series Saturday night at Falcon Park. Left-hander Yonathan Ramirez will pitch for Auburn against West Virginia right-hander Stephan Meyer. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. Enjoy a spectacular post-game fireworks show presented by CSEA Local 806, Hot Country K101.7 & K104.5 and Finger Lakes News Radio WAUB. Saturday is also "CSEA Local 806 Night." Complimentary General Admission tickets are available from CSEA Local 806. "Boy Scout Sleepover Night" is on Saturday at Falcon Park too. Boy Scouts in uniform will be recognized on the field before the game.
