July 29, 2016 - New York-Penn League (NYPL)
Mahoning Valley Scrappers News Release
Aberdeen, MD-After two days off due to a travel day and a rain out, the Mahoning Valley Scrappers split a doubleheader with the Aberdeen Ironbirds on Friday night. The Scrappers won game one, 7-1. In game two, a season high five errors were too much to overcome as the Ironbirds won 6-2.
Erlin Cerda got the Scrappers going early in game one. With two outs and Andrew Calica on base, Cerda connected on a two run homerun to put the Scrappers up 2-0 in the first inning.
The Scrappers would add a single run in the fifth inning on an Alexis Pantoja RBI single. Pantoja would drive in another run in the sixth inning with an RBI groundout. In the sixth Emmanuel Tapia would put the game away with a three run homerun,
Shane Bieber started game one and went 3.0 innings. He allowed three hits while walking one and striking out three. Michael Letkewicz (4-0) earned the win in 2.2 innings of relief. He allowed one earned run on three hits. Letkewicz walked one and struck out two. Henry Martinez would then follow with 1.1 innings of relief. He allowed one hit and struck out one.
In game two the Scrappers would fall behind 1-0 heading into the second inning. In the second, Gabriel Mejia would deliver and RBI single to tie the game and load the bases. Andrew Calica would then put the Scrappers in the lead when he was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
However, the Scrappers defensively would commit four errors over the next four innings. Every error would eventually lead to a run on the board for the Ironbirds. The big inning for Aberdeen was the third inning. They took advantage of two errors in the inning to put five runs on the board for a lead they wouldn't surrender.
The loss in game two snapped the Scrappers season high six game winning streak.
Luis Jimenez (0-4) started and took the loss in game two in 2.2 innings of work. HE allowed six runs, four earned, on four hits. Jimenez walked one and struck out three. Ryan Colegate would go 2.1 innings of scoreless relief. He allowed just two hits and struck out six. Ryan Perez finished the game with 1.0 inning of relief. He allowed one hit and struck out one.
The Scrappers (18-22) and IronBirds (16-24) will conclude their series on Saturday night at 7:05pm. Aaron Civale will get the start for Mahoning Valley.
