Hudson Valley Renegades News Release
STATEN ISLAND, NY - Despite 11 walks by Staten Island Yankees pitchers, the Hudson Valley Renegades left 11 men on base and struck out nine times in losing 6-4 to the Yankees Friday night at The Ballpark at St. George. The loss ended an eight-game winning streak for the Renegades over the Yankees. The win also moved Staten Island to one game behind Hudson Valley for first place in the McNamara Division.
Staten Island got on the board in the second with a solo homer by centerfielder Dom Thompson-Williams (2) to give the Yankees a 1-0 lead.
However, Hudson Valley immediately came back by scoring two runs in the third. With one out, leftfielder Jake Fraley singled then moved to third on a two out double by first baseman Nate Lowe. Catcher Danny De La Calle would follow that with a two-run double down the leftfield line to give the Renegades a 2-1 lead.
The Yankees came back to retake the lead by putting two runs on the board in the bottom of the third. With the bases loaded and no one out, Hudson Valley starter Noel Rodriguez got back-to-back strikeouts to put himself in position to get out of the inning unscathed. That's when first baseman Dalton Blaser grounded a single into centerfield to score two runs and put Staten Island back on top 3-2.
But Staten Island's pitchers couldn't keep the ball in the strike zone, and Hudson Valley used it to their advantage. After Staten Island starter Freicer Perez walked five men over three innings, he was lifted for reliever David Palladino who proceeded to walk five men in the fourth inning alone. Two of those walks came with the bases loaded and allowed the Renegades to take a 4-3 lead. De La Calle and second baseman Miles Mastrobuoni were at the plate on those walks giving them an RBI each.
But the Renegades really shot themselves in the foot as they left the bases loaded three times over the game's first four innings allowing the Yankees to stay close. In fact, Hudson Valley left 10 men on base through the game's first four innings.
Staten Island tied the game in the fifth. With one out, second baseman Danienger Perez singled. Following a popout, rightfielder Timmy Robinson was hit with a pitch to put runners at first and second with two out. Reliever Deivy Mendez replaced Rodriguez and proceeded to give up an RBI single to Thomspon-Williams to tie the game at four.
The game stayed tied as relievers Mendez and David Sosebee of the Yankees matched each other zero for zero until the eighth. Thompson-Williams led off the inning for Staten Island with a double. Following a walk to Blaser, shortstop Angel Aguilar laid down a sacrifice bunt to third, which Haley threw wide of first and down the rightfield line. Thompson-Williams scored on the play and Blaser moved to third. Leftfielder Kendall Coleman followed that with a sac fly to center to give the Yankees a 6-4 lead. The bottom-third of the Staten Island order went a combined 0-9 but laid down the sac bunt and got the sac fly at the right time.
Reliever Chad Taylor (2-0) took over for Sosebee in the eighth and stuck out four of the six men he faced to pick up the win. Sosebee went 3.1 scoreless innings for the Yankees allowing two hits and striking out two more. Mendez (1-2) suffered the loss for Hudson Valley after giving up two runs on three hits in 3.1 innings, while striking out three.
The Renegades only had five hits in the game, but got three RBI from De La Calle. Staten Island had nine hits including a 3-4 performance from Thompson-Williams who homered, doubled and drove in two runs while scoring two more. Blaser chipped in by going 2-3 with two RBI and a run scored.
The Renegades return home for the final game of their series against Staten Island Saturday night. First pitch is slated for 7:05. Right-hander Spencer Moran will take the hill for Hudson Valley (2-1, 2.12 ERA) against a to-be-determined pitcher for the Yankees. It will be Mother's Day at Dutchess Stadium and a fireworks show will follow the game. For tickets, call 845-838-0094 or go to hvrenegades.com.
