Medicine Hat Tigers News Release
Medicine Hat, AB -- The Medicine Hat Tigers went into Friday night's contest with the Lethbridge Hurricanes looking to close the gap in their chase to the post season. The Hurricanes on the other hand were looking to clinch their 1st Central Division title since 1996.
The Tigers came out with lots of energy in the opening minutes of the game, however the Tabbies got a break on the first shift after a turnover the Canes hit the post past Tigers starter Nick Schneider as his little red friends kept the game scoreless. The game would get it's first goal of the game by the home side as Ryley Lindgren got his 27th of the season 5 minutes in. A few minutes later the Canes would extend their lead on a Ben Duperault goal, just his 3rd of the season. Medicine Hat couldn't get one past Lethbridge starter Stuart Skinner in the frame and trailed 2-0 after 20 minutes.
The middle frame didn't start the greatest for the Tigers as Zach Fischer was called for a hook 30 seconds in and Cory Millette capitalized on the opportunity to extend the Canes lead to 3-0. Medicine Hat would score on a power play of their own as David Quenneville potted a blast from the side wall, his first of two goals on the night. Lethbridge would add 2 more in the period as the Tigers trailed 5-1 after 40 minutes, in need of a big comeback, something they have done over the past 2 weeks.
In the third period it became more of the traditional Lethbridge/Medicine Hat rivalry as some rough stuff took place. Nick Heid layed out Duperault with a big check at the blue line, multiple Canes skaters took exception and a small melee occurred with an instgator given out to Darian Skeoch who jumped in to fight Heid. The Tabbies would make the game interesting as they scored back to back power play goals on the 4 minute advantage resulting from the scrum. Quenneville scored his 14th of the season and Fischer made up for his earlier penalty with his 7th of the year after Steven Owre made a nifty move for the initial shot, Fischer found the rebound into a yawning cage.
That would be all the scoring the Tigers had on the night as Medicine Hat tried to pull their goalie with 4 minutes left. Lethbridge would score twice into the open cage, including a rare sight in goaltender Stuart Skinner scoring a "goalie goal" as the Tigers would drop a 9-3 decision.
