Victoria, BC- WHL Commissioner Ron Robison announced today, on behalf of the WHL Board of Governors, that Head Off-ice Official Bill Sanderson has been named a recipient of the WHL Distinguished Service Award for the 2015-16 season.

The WHL Distinguished Service Award, which was introduced by the league in 2004, is presented annually to individuals who have worked tirelessly behind the scenes on behalf of franchises and in doing so have made an extraordinary contribution at the club or league level over an extended period of time. The WHL presents Distinguished Service Awards annually to an individual from both the Western and Eastern Conferences.

"The Victoria Royals organization would like to thank Bill for his tireless efforts over the years," General Manager Cameron Hope said. "Bill is a golden thread in Victoria's sports fabric, and this recognition by the WHL is certainly well deserved."

Sanderson was honoured by the WHL Commissioner Ron Robison in Victoria tonight before the Royals' game against the Everett Silvertips.

Over the past 41 years, Sanderson has been a cornerstone of the local sports community. The Victoria, BC native began his career as an off-ice official in 1975 with the WHL's Victoria Cougars, and just five years later started his current 35-year run as the Official Scorekeeper for the cities sports franchises.

Sanderson has overseen more than 2,200 games in Victoria as an off-ice official for numerous teams and leagues that have called the island home:

- WHL - Nearly 900 home games in 24 years (1975-1994 & 2011-2016)

- BCHL - Nearly 700 home games in 22 years

- VIJHL - Nearly 400 home games in 16 years

- ECHL - More than 250 home games in seven years

The Royals will begin the 2016 WHL Playoffs on Friday, March 25th and Saturday, March 26th with Games 1 and 2 at the Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre vs. a team yet to be determined. Puck drop for both contests is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. Tickets can be purchased in person at the Select Your Tickets Box Office, over the phone by calling 250-220-7889 or by visiting www.selectyourtickets.com.
