Brandon Wheat Kings News Release
Brandon, MB. - The Brandon Wheat Kings ran their winning streak to eight games Friday night with a 6-2 victory over the visiting Moose Jaw Warriors.
The Wheat Kings, who will bring the curtain down on their 2015-16 Western Hockey League regular season on Saturday night against Regina, reached the 100-point mark for the second straight season and the eighth time in franchise history.
Veteran John Quenneville and rookies Linden McCorrister and Stelio Mattheos scored two goals each as the Wheat Kings beat Moose Jaw for the seventh time in eight tries this season.
"More of the same for Stelio Mattheos. He continues to improve and take advantage of greater opportunity," Brandon GM/Coach Kelly McCrimmon told Bruce Luebke on CKLQ's post-game show. "For Linden McCorrister, he'd been out of our lineup since late January...really important for us to get him back in this weekend, and will be great for his confidence to be able to contribute with a couple of really nice goals."
Mattheos, the first overall selection in the 2014 WHL Bantam Draft, now has seven goals and 13 points in eight games in March.
The Wheat Kings jumped out to a quick 2-0 first period lead but saw the Warriors battle back to even the score early in the second. Quenneville's first goal - nine minutes into the second - snapped the tie and Brandon went on to the win, improving their record to 47-18-4-2 on the season.
Noah Gregor and Dryden Hunt scored in a losing cause for the Warriors, who were outshot 45-18.
Saturday's game, which is the final Brandon Source for Sports - SUBWAY Family Night of the season, will feature the WHL club's Annual Awards Night. Trophies will be handed out before, during and immediately following the game.
Tickets to the game as well as Brandon's first two playoff games scheduled for Thursday and Good Friday, March 24th and 25th, are on sale at the Keystone Centre box office, by calling 726-3555 or online at keystonecentre.com.
