Medicine Hat Tigers News Release
Medicine Hat, AB -- The Tigers hit the road on Tuesday to take on the Regina Pats to start a 4 game in 5 night span. Medicine Hat would dominate for majority of the game, including a 20 shot second period but found themselves on the opposite end of a 4-2 score.
In the opening frame Medicine Hat came out on the attack as the Pats had no answer for their forecheck. The top line of Cole Sanford, Steven Owre and Matt Bradley were electric, creating chances on Pats goaltender Tyler Brown. Mason Shaw also had himself a good opening frame, recording 3 shots and coming close to two goals. Medicine Hat's power play on the road hasn't been great this year, going 1/29 heading into the night. The Tigers would get 3 man advantages in the frame but could not capitalize on them, despite moving the puck well. Regina would score shorthanded on one of the Tigers power plays, taking that 1-0 lead into the break.
There was only one goal in the middle frame, but the highlight of the second period was the physical play as the game saw two fights that didn't involve Connor Clouston. Both Mason Shaw and Zach Fischer threw down the gloves. Shaw took on Lane Zablocki behind the play just past the midway point. Zablocki would pick up a rare jersey violation misconduct as he intentionally took his arm out of his jersey to fight. Fischer on the other hand took on Luc Smith. Smith and Fischer were battling behind the net when tempers boiled over and the gloves were off.
After the Fischer fight, the Tigers would tie the game up as Chad Butcher carried the puck down the wing and slid the puck on net. A driving Max Gerlach got his stick on it and poked it past Brown. The puck sat on the goal line and Gerlach would swing around the net and pot his 8th of the season. After a short review on the goal to see if the net was off, the goal counted and we were headed to the 3rd period.
All the action in the final frame happened within the last 6 minutes of the game. It all started when Alex Mowbray caught Pats defender James Hilsendager on the shoulder as he was falling, netting #24 for the Tigers a 5 minute major for charging and a game misconduct. Medicine Hat would get a spark from the good kill as Mason Shaw finally came through on his chances and stole a puck shorthanded, roofing the puck past Brown to take the lead.
The lead would be short lived as the Pats would score back to back goals within 48 seconds. First it was Jake Leschyshyn netting his 2nd of the season, followed by Austin Wagner, both goals came off of Tigers turnovers, something the orange and black hadn't done all game. Medicine Hat would take a late slashing penalty and could not muster any chances in the final minutes, eventually surrendering an empty netter and falling 4-2.
THREE STARS OF THE GAME:
1. SAM STEEL - REG - (1G)
2. TYLER BROWN - REG - (35 SAVES, W)
3. MASON SHAW - MH - (SHG, 5 PIM)
The Tigers travel down the Trans Canada to Manitoba to take on the Brandon Wheat Kings tomorrow night before returning home to the Canalta Centre Friday and Saturday.
