November 18, 2015 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Medicine Hat Tigers News Release

@ WHEAT KINGS: Tonight marks the first of four meetings between the Wheat Kings and Tigers. Medicine Hat was 0-3-0-1 against the reigning Eastern Conference Champions, with the shootout loss happening November 15th, 2014. Cole Sanford and Steven Owre are the Tigers leading scorers from last season against Brandon, scoring 2 points each in the 4 games. Meanwhile Tim McGauley scored 5 points in the 4 games for Brandon and Jordan Papirny went 4-0-0-0 with a 1.22 GAA.

TONIGHT'S MATCHUP:

Medicine Hat leads the series against the Wheat Kings over the past 5 season, sporting a 11-7-1-1 mark, including a 4-4-1-1 record in Manitoba over that same span

Brandon is 4-6-0-0 in their past 10 games, while Medicine Hat is 4-4-1-1 and are coming off a 4-2 defeat last night in Regina

For Medicine Hat it marks the first time the squad has started a season below .500 after 18 games since the 2012-13 edition of the Tigers, they ended the season 3 games above .500 with a 36-33-2-1 record

2015-16 WHL RANKINGS: Record (6-9-2-1).   Central Div. - 5th Eastern Con. - 11th Home - (5-5-0-1) Away (1-4-2-0)

TIGERS FAST FACTS:

Medicine is currently under a power outage on the power play away from the Canalta Centre, the Tigers only have 1 goal on 32 opportunities with the man advantage

Brandon is 2-2-0-1 against Central Division opponents this season, meanwhile Medicine Hat is 1-3-1-0 against the East Division so far

Tigers forwards Mason Shaw and Max Gerlach come into this game riding mini 2 game point streaks, Shaw has scored in back to back games, while Gerlach scored his 8th of the season last night to tie him for the team lead in goals with Steven Owre

TOUGH STRETCH: The Brandon Wheat Kings were supposed to come into this season as the favorites to win the Eastern Conference this season. So far after 21 games they find themselves in 2nd place in the East Division, 5 points behind the surprising Prince Albert Raiders. Brandon's fall from the top has occurred over their last 5 games as they have dropped 4 of those decisions and have been outscored 5-16. For Medicine Hat, they are in a similar rut having only won once in their last 6 games but have picked up two points along the way with overtime and shootout losses to Kootenay and Red Deer. However compared to the Wheat Kings slide, the Tabbies have found the back of the net scoring 21 times and allowing 25 goals.

SPECIAL TEAMS: For both clubs tonight, special teams have not been kind this season as both the Tigers and Wheat Kings sit 20th and 21st in penalty kill overall in the WHL respectively. Brandon had the 17th ranked PK in the league at the end of last season with the Tigers having the 7th best. Medicine Hat also boasted the 6th most shorthanded goals in the league, however this season Mason Shaw scored the first shortie of the year last night against Regina. On the other side of the coin, the power play also hasn't done well in Manitoba with the Wheat Kings sporting the 19th best man advantage unit compared to being the 2nd best in the league at the end of last year, Medicine Hat is ranked 16th just a few spots behind their 11th ranking last season.
