Tigers Defeat ValleyCats 9-4

Tri-City ValleyCats News Release
TROY, NY - Richard Gonzalez went 3-for-3 with a double, and a run batted in, while Cesar Carrasco went 3-for-4 with two runs scored, but the Tri-City ValleyCats fell 9-4 to the Connecticut Tigers on Sunday evening, at Joseph L. Bruno Stadium.
One night after a 11-4 series-opening win over the Tigers, the 'Cats got on the board first on Sunday, when Johnny Sewald walked to lead off the bottom of the first frame, stole second base, then scored on a double by Kolbey Carpenter, putting Tri-City ahead 1-0.
That one run lead held until the top of the fifth frame, when Connecticut pushed five runs across, all with two outs. The Tigers also scored three runs in the eighth, and one in the ninth.
Tri-City didn't go down quietly, however, as Gonzalez drove home Carrasco with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the seventh, and Pat Porter plated Brooks Marlow and Carrasco with a two-run double in the ninth frame.
Despite the loss, the ValleyCats' playoff positioning remained unaffected, since Saturday's 11-4 victory clinched the second seed in the New York-Penn League playoffs. However, Tri-City's first round opponent remains undecided.
As the winner of the Stedler Divison, and holder of the number two seed, they will face the winner of the McNamara Division, which after Sunday's games, is led by Staten Island, who holds a 40-34 record.
The Aberdeen IronBirds, who defeated the Hudson Valley Renegades 4-0 on Sunday, finished the day a half-game behind the Yankees, with a 40-35 record.
If Staten Island defeats the Brooklyn Cyclones on Monday, they will clinch their division title, and face the ValleyCats in the semifinal series.
For Aberdeen to win the division, they would have to beat Hudson Valley on Monday, and have Staten Island lose to Brooklyn.
The ValleyCats will conclude their regular season slate, wrapping up this three-game set against Tigers with a 5 p.m., first pitch. On the mound for Tri-City will be RHP Jose Hernandez (0-0, 6.23), with LHP Toller Boardman (0-0, 1.50) getting the start for Connecticut.
