Costly Error Hands Yankees Win

BROOKLYN, NY (September 6, 2015) - The Cyclones rallied twice in the eighth and ninth inning to tie the game, but a costly error from Pedro Perez led to a pair on unearned runs in the top of the 10th as Brooklyn fell to Staten Island by the score of 4-2 on Sunday afternoon.

Raul Jacobson made the start for the Cyclones on Sunday afternoon and was impressive over his 7.0 innings of work. The non-drafted free agent allowed just a single run on five hits while walking one and striking out five. The lone blemish on his record came in the top of the fifth when Junior Valera started the frame with an infield single and came around to score later in the frame courtesy of a Jhalan Jackson double off the left field wall that made it 1-0 in favor of the Baby Bombers.

That's how it would stay as Yankees hurler Kolton Mahoney was even more impressive on the mound. The righthander retired the first 12 Cyclones he faced before Zach Mathieu started the bottom of the fifth with a line drive single down the first base line, but was erased when he tried to stretch the hit into a double.

The Cyclones best scoring chance off the Yankees starter came in the bottom of the seventh when Enmanuel Zabala started the inning with a single, stole second and advanced to third on a ground out. Brooklyn wasn't able to get the tying run home however, as Brandon Brosher struck out swinging leaving the tying run just 90 feet away. That was the end of Mahoney's night, as he tossed 7.0 shutout frames, allowing just three hits while striking out nine.

With Mahoney out of the game, the Cyclones were finally able to break through in the bottom of the eighth. Jose Garcia greeted Yankees reliever Josh Roeder with a leadoff single to start the threat. The Cyclones catcher advanced to second on a groundout by Oswald Caraballo and was still there with two-outs when Manuel Hilario smoked a perfectly placed double down the left field line to score Garcia and knot the score at 1-1.

But Staten Island quickly struck back when Trey Amburgey connected on the first offering from Corey Taylor in the top of the ninth and sent it over the left field wall for solo shot that gave Staten Island a 2-1 edge.

However, in the bottom of the frame the Cyclones continued the see-saw scoring and tied the game up once again. Enmanuel Zabala started the rally with a line-drive double down the left field line on the first pitch he saw to instantly put a runner in scoring position. Desmond Lindsay took advantage of the scoring chance, sending a 1-1 offering back up the middle to score Zabala and knot the score and send it into extra innings.

PJ Conlon, who came in Sunday's game having not allowed a run in his 16.0 innings of work since being drafted in the MLB Draft in June, quickly found himself in trouble in the top of the 10th. The southpaw gave up a single to Jake Hernandez to start the frame and after a sacrifice bunt and a single there were runners on the corners with only one out. Conlon battled back, striking out Jeff Hendrix for out number two and then intentionally walked Amburgey to load the bases for Ryan Krill. The Yankees first baseman hit a soft groundball to third base for what looked like it would be the final out of the inning. But Pedro Perez rushed his throw, sailing it wildly into the Cyclones dugout to allow a pair of runs to score and give Staten Island a 4-2 lead.

That's how it would end as Jonny Drozd pitched a 1-2-3 bottom of the frame for Staten Island to close out the win.

The loss dropped Brooklyn to 33-42 on the season, and moved Staten Island's magic number to one. With a win on Monday or a loss by the Aberdeen IronBirds on Sunday night or Monday, the Yankees will clinch the McNamara Division title. The 2015 season finale will be Monday evening at 5:00 PM.
