Mahoning Valley Scrappers News Release

Typically, eight runs and 12 hits would be enough to give a team a win, but not on Sunday afternoon.

The Scrappers dropped the second game of a three-game series to the Black Bears 12-8 at Eastwood Field. The Black Bears scored five runs in the top of the first against Micah Miniard, who didn't make it out of the first inning.

Mitchell Tolman led things off with a single. Christian Kelley reached on a fielder's choice, and later scored, along with Ty Moore, on a ground-rule double for Logan Hill.

Hill scored on a double by Ke'Bryan Hayes, and Hayes scored, along with Carlos Munoz, on a single for Casey Hughston. West Virginia led 5-0 after the top of the first.

Willi Castro scored on a Luis Escobar wild pitch in the bottom of the first.

Mahoning Valley got another in the second on an RBI double for Jodd Carter, who snapped a streak of 0-for-32.

The Scrappers had a big fourth inning, and took a 6-5 lead. Mark Mathias doubled and later scored on Carter's second double of the game. Nate Winfrey walked and scored on an error by Erik Forgione. Carter scored on a bunt for Gabriel Mejia, and Alexis Panotja scored on a triple for Castro.

The lead didn't last long. Hughston doubled in the fifth to score Hill and Munoz, and the Black Bears took the lead for good.

Ka'ai Tom hit his third home run of the season in the bottom of the fifth. Tom now leads the Scrappers in home runs.

The Scrappers pitching staff allowed 12 runs and 15 hits. Brock Hartson (4-1) earned his fourth loss of the season.

The two teams play on Monday afternoon at 1:05 at Eastwood Field. Matt Esparza, the team's leader in strikeouts, takes the hill for the Scrappers in the season finale.
