Norfolk Tides News Release
Norfolk used an exceptional effort from the bullpen to knock off the Durham Bulls 4-2 Friday night at Harbor Park.
The Tides were forced to start reliever Richard Rodriguez in place of scheduled starter David Hale, as Hale was scratched from the contest just prior to the game due to a right calf injury. Rodriguez, making his first appearance as a starter since an outing for Class-A Greensboro on July 17, 2012, allowed two runs on five hits over 2.1 innings of work. Hale will be further reevaluated Saturday.
Scott McGough (1-1) followed Rodriguez with 3.2 shutout innings of relief to earn the win, as he allowed two hits and two walks while striking out three. McGough has now posted a 1.13 ERA (3 ER, 24.0 IP) with 17 strikeouts over his last 10 relief outings, lowering his ERA to 3.44 through 18 appearances with the Tides this season.
Chaz Roe, Pedro Beato and Oliver Drake worked the final three innings, with Drake striking out the side in the ninth to earn his ninth save of the season. Roe has now worked 10 consecutive scoreless relief outings, while Drake has turned in 13 straight shutout appearances of his own.
Each of the last nine outs Drake has recorded have come via a strikeout.
Christian Walker doubled, singled and added a sacrifice fly to pace Norfolk's offense, while Xavier Avery added a two-run double in the second inning. The Tides plated three runs on four hits over three innings off of Durham starter Jaime Schultz (5-4), who had held Norfolk to one hit over seven innings in his previous start against the Tides.
With the win, Norfolk has now won three of its last four games, over which the Tides have posted a 1.29 ERA (5 ER, 35.0 IP).
The two clubs continue their three-game series Saturday night at Harbor Park, with first pitch set for 7:05. Ariel Miranda (1-7, 5.37) gets the start for Norfolk and will be opposed by right-hander Austin Pruitt (5-4, 3.16).
Saturday is Marine Corps Night at Harbor Park, as the Tides will honor the brave men and women that serve in the Marine Corps. Active duty and retired United States Marines can receive discounted tickets at the Harbor Park box office. There will be a special pre-game appearance by the United States Marine Corps Silent Drill Platoon, as well as a postgame fireworks extravaganza presented by Navy Mutual.
Notes: Prior to Friday's game, catcher Zach Booker was transferred to Norfolk's roster from Class-A Aberdeen...Dariel Alvarez singled and walked twice in the contest, giving him eight walks over his last six games...Sharlon Schoop singled, walked and drove in a run in the win...Pedro Beato's appearance was his 31st of the season, tied for the most in all of Minor League Baseball.
