Norris' Masterful Performance Leads Hens to Win
June 17, 2016 - International League (IL1)
Toledo Mud Hens News Release
The Mud Hens made it two wins in a row Friday as they were able to pull away from the Rochester Red Wings in game one of their three game set.
The promising pitching matchup did not disappoint on Friday night in front of a packed house at Fifth Third Field. Prospects Jose Berrios (ROC), and Daniel Norris (TOL) faced off in what looked to be a low scoring contest.
Through the first four frames Hens' lefty Daniel Norris kept the talented Rochester offense silent recording six punch outs and allowing just three hits. Jose Berrios matched Norris' goose eggs, until the bottom half of the fourth. After recording JaCoby Jones, and Casey McGehee on a ground out and a fly out, Chad Huffman struck a ground ball to short which looked to be the third out. However, Red Wings' shortstop Wilfredo Tovar booted the ball and Huffman reached first safely. After stealing second base, Tyler Collins brought Huffman in with a shallow RBI single to right field, as the Hens took a 1-0 lead.
After the one run blemish, Berrios battled back to throw up a zero in the fifth. But, in the sixth Lloyd McClendon pulled Casey McGehee from the game and sent Tyler Bortnick to the dish to pinch hit. And Bortnick wasted no time at the plate as he sent a Berrios fastball over the wall in left field for a long home run, as Toledo took a 2-0 lead.
After cruising through five, Daniel Norris found himself in a bit of a jam after surrendering back to back singles to Kennys Vargas and Eddie Rosario in the sixth. With runners at the corners and just one out, Norris was able to induce an inning ending 5-4-3 to escape the jam. Norris' night came to an end after a masterful seven innings allowing no runs on six hits with eight strikeouts.
Norris's eight punch outs added to his season total of 63, which leads all Mud Hens' hurlers.
Record Books: Tyler Bortnick put the Hens up 2-0 with his pinch hit home run in the sixth, sending Jose Berrios to the showers. The solo shot was Bortnick's first home run of the season, and his fourth RBI of the season. The last time the Hens had a pinch hitter slug a home run was in 2012, when Brad Eldred did it against the Syracuse Chiefs.
Kyle Ryan relieved Norris seven strong frames in the eighth as he sent the Red Wings down in order. Bruce Rondon was summoned in the ninth to keep the two run lead intact and shut the door. The hard throwing right hander did just that as he sent down the middle third of the Rochester lineup in order to earn his ninth save of the season.
The two teams are back in action for game two of the three game set Saturday. First pitch is set for 7:05 PM.
