Tides Get Going Too Late in Loss to Durham
May 21, 2013 - International League (IL1)
Norfolk Tides News Release
Norfolk's late comeback bid fell just short as the Tides were edged by the Durham Bulls 3-2 Tuesday night at Harbor Park.
The Tides trailed by a run entering the last of the ninth, but L.J. Hoes sparked a comeback attempt with a one-out single off Kirby Yates. One out later, Brandon Wood lined a ball that short-hopped in front of left fielder Brandon Guyer for a single, putting runners at the corners with two outs. Chris Robinson then lofted a deep fly ball to left field, but Guyer settled under it on the warning track to thwart the comeback bid and give the Bulls a 3-2 victory.
Durham starter Chris Archer (5-2) was magnificent in the win, as he retired each of the first 14 batters he faced before L.J. Hoes worked a two-out walk in the fifth inning. Archer, who entered the season as the #4 prospect in the Rays system according to MLB.com, struck out six and allowed three hits to help the Bulls pull within 3.0 games of the Tides in the IL South division. The Tides did not record their first hit until Wood led off the sixth frame with a solo home run to left field, his first long ball in a Norfolk uniform.
Wood is now hitting .341 with a home run and eight RBI in nine games since joining the Tides on May 11. He also has six multi-hit games over that span.
Tsuyoshi Wada (0-1) took the loss in his second rehab start with the Tides. The 32-year-old left-hander, who is recovering from "Tommy John" surgery, allowed two earned runs on six hits in four-plus innings and departed after allowing three consecutive singles to open the fifth inning. Two of those batters came in to score and were charged to Wada, who walked two and struck out one while throwing 47 of his 83 pitches for strikes.
Hoes had two hits and a walk in four plate appearances, upping his season average to .315. The 23-year-old outfielder now has 13 multi-hit games over his last 26 contests.
The two teams will conclude their four-game home-and-home series Wednesday night from Harbor Park, with first pitch set for 6:35. Josh Stinson (2-1, 3.68) will take the mound for Norfolk against Bulls left-hander Alex Torres (2-2, 2.39).
Notes: Before the game, Xavier Avery was transferred to Norfolk from Double-A Bowie and infielder Ryan Flaherty was activated after being optioned from Baltimore...The Tides are now 4-8 against Durham and 26-7 against the rest of the International League...Adam Russell tossed two shutout innings and has not allowed a run over his last 11.0 innings...Travis Ishikawa singled in the seventh inning and has now hit safely in 22 of his last 23 games...Norfolk has homered in 23 of its last 24 games.
