Syracuse Mets News Release
The Syracuse Chiefs, the Triple-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, won their second straight game with a 7-5 win over the Toledo Mud Hens on Tuesday afternoon. Center fielder Corey Brown smashed a two-out, two-run home run in the eighth inning to drive in the go-ahead runs, and Syracuse added three runs in the ninth before hanging on to claim a series win.
Catcher Brian Jeroloman drove in the first run for Syracuse (18-27), extending his red-hot start with the team. Carlos Rivero began the third inning with a double off of Mud Hens starter Derek Hankins to bring up Jeroloman. The left-handed-hitting catcher drilled a double off the right-field wall to score Rivero and put the Chiefs on top. Jeroloman's now driven in a run in each of his three Syracuse games, going four for nine with three walks.
That lead held up for the first five-and-one-third innings thanks to starter Ryan Tatusko. The right-hander struck out nine Mud Hens while surrendering just three singles and one walk. He exited with Kevin Russo on first base and one out in the bottom of the sixth inning, with right-hander Jeremy Accardo entering the game.
Toledo (15-32) then continued what would become a three-run rally to take the lead. Designated hitter Jordan Lennerton worked a nine-pitch walk, putting runners at first and second base for Nick Castellanos. The Mud Hens' left fielder hit Accardo's first pitch over the right-center field wall for a three-run home run, putting Toledo ahead by a 3-1 score.
The Chiefs launched a rally of their own in the eighth inning against Mud Hens relief pitcher Evan Reed. After a leadoff walk by Chris Rahl, Jeff Kobernus bounced a ball toward the middle that went under the glove of second baseman Gustavo Nunez. The fielding error moved Rahl to third base and put Kobernus on at first. Second baseman Will Rhymes followed with an RBI groundout to second base, scoring Rahl and advancing Kobernus to second base. After Chris Marrero grounded out, moving Kobernus to third base, left-hander Kenny Faulk entered to face Brown, who drilled a 1-1 pitch to the left of the 406-foot marker in center field for a go-ahead two-run home run. The long ball, Brown's third of the season, put Syracuse on top by a run.
After Mike Crotta worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the eighth inning, Syracuse seemingly busted the game wide open in the ninth. Zach Walters walked, Rivero reached on an infield single and Jeroloman walked to load the bases against Faulk. Right-hander Brayan Villarreal entered to face Rahl, who grounded lightly to third base to score Walters. Kobernus then slammed the next pitch over Castellanos' head in left field, scoring Rivero and Jeroloman on a two-run double to extend the lead to 7-3.
The Mud Hens, however, weren't done. Quintin Berry and Russo singled with one out in the ninth inning, and Lennerton followed suit with a two-run double to left field, slicing the Syracuse lead to 7-5. Chiefs manager Tony Beasley then summoned Erik Davis, who walked Castellanos to put the go-ahead run at the plate. But Syracuse's closer recovered, retiring Danny Dorn on a fly out and Ben Guez on a game-ending groundout.
Syracuse next faces off with Columbus after an off day on Wednesday. The Chiefs will begin a four-game set with the Clippers on Thursday night at 7:05.
