Pawtucket Red Sox News Release
PAWTUCKET, R.I. -- The Indianapolis Indians jumped out to a big first inning lead off knuckleballer Steven Wright on the way to an 8-4 victory over the Pawtucket Red Sox on Monday at McCoy Stadium.
As defending champion of the International League West Division, Indianapolis improved to 32-14 by winning for the second time in three days. Meanwhile, the PawSox, as reigning Governor's Cup champs, are 26-19 overall and 3-4 on their current homestand, which concludes Tuesday afternoon.
Wright (L, 2-2) walked the leadoff hitter Alex Pressley on five pitches. One out later, Felix Pie reached on an infield single, setting up a two-out RBI single by Jared Goedert. Ahead 1-0, the Indians benefited from another walk, of Brett Carroll, to set up Jerry Sands with the bases loaded.
Sands, who was briefly a Red Sox property, drove his second home run of the series just inside the left-field foul pole for a grand slam and a 5-0 lead. Indianapolis's parent club Pittsburgh acquired Sands from Boston in a multi-player deal last December after he'd been traded from to the Sox from the Los Angeles Dodgers.
While Wright settled down to face the minimum the next three innings, Pawtucket got to his counterpart Brooks Brown. Brock Holt, who was involved in the same trade as Sands, coming to the Red Sox from the Pirates, led off the third inning with a double. Two batters later, Jackie Bradley Jr. belted his first Triple-A homer off a 3-2 pitch to draw the PawSox to within, 5-2.
But Indianapolis expanded its lead on an RBI single by Pie in the fifth inning and a home run by Goedert leading off the sixth.
Behind 7-2, Pawtucket scored on Holt's third hit of the night, a single to bring home Brandon Snyder, in the bottom of the seventh, only to see reliever Jose De La Torre, just back from Boston, walked in a run the following inning.
Brown (W, 3-0) completed 6 2/3 innings en route to his third victory in as many decisions. Relievers Mike Zagurski and Tim Alderson struck out five in the final inning and a third to close out the contest. Alderson allowed a solo homer by Jose Iglesias, his fourth, in the ninth to cap the scoring.
Bradley, Snyder and Holt accounted for seven of Pawtucket's nine hits. The PawSox finished the night by going 2-for-10 with runners in scoring position.
They'll conclude their homestand at 12:05 on Tuesday, as Rubby De La Rosa (0-1, 3.65) confronts lefty Andy Oliver (3-1, 2.61).
