Chiefs Best Hens With Late Rally in Wild Finish

May 21, 2013 - International League (IL1)
Toledo Mud Hens News Release

The Syracuse Chiefs defeated the Mud Hens 7-5 in a wild, run-filled finish in front of a sellout crowd at Fifth Third Field Tuesday morning.

For the first time all series, neither team scored in the first innning, and the game remained scoreless until Syracuse connected for back-to-back doubles in the third to take a 1-0 lead. The lead remained until the sixth inning when Nick Castellanos ripped his fifth homer of the year, a three-run blast to right-center to give the Hens a 3-1 lead.

The Hens held the lead until the eighth when the Chiefs scored three runs a piece in the top of the eighth and the top of the ninth to take a commanding 7-3 lead. The Hens then rallied for two runs thanks to Jordan Lennerton, who went 4-for-4, including a two-run double in the ninth to cut the lead to 7-5.

The Hens had a chance to win with the winning run at the plate in the ninth, but Danny Dorn flew out and Ben Guez grounded out to end the series. Evan Reed suffered the loss, his second of the season, after allowing four earned runs in 1/3 an inning of work.

The Mud Hens are off tomorrow before travelling to Gwinnett to take on the Braves on Thursday. LHP Ramon Garcia (1-4, 5.20) is scheduled to start the opener for Toledo.
