Norfolk Tides News Release
Christian Walker and Trey Mancini both homered, but an early deficit was too much to overcome as Norfolk dropped a 7-4 decision to the Charlotte Knights Wednesday night at Harbor Park.
Walker got the Tides on the board in the fifth inning with a three-run shot to left field, his team-leading seventh homer of the year. The South Carolina product now ranks second in the International League with 23 RBI, while his seven home runs are tied for the second-most in the league. His homer also gave him 31 career round trippers in a Norfolk uniform, just two behind Josh Bell's 33 for the most by a Tides player since Norfolk became an Orioles affiliate in 2007.
Mancini provided Norfolk's other run with an opposite-field solo blast in the eighth inning, his third homer in 17 games with the Tides. It was also his 10th home run of the season between Norfolk and Bowie, tied for the second-most in all of Minor League Baseball. Mancini, the #5 prospect in the Orioles system according to MLB.com, has now hit safely in six of his last seven games, over which he's batted .321 (9-28).
Norfolk starter Nick Additon (1-3) took the loss after yielding a season-high six runs (four earned) on six hits over 5.2 innings of work. He walked three and struck out two, with the big blow against him being a three-run first inning homer off the bat of former Tide Travis Ishikawa.
Jimmy Paredes doubled and singled in four at-bats to help pace Norfolk's 10-hit attack. He's now hit .400 (6-15) with a home run, two doubles and four runs scored in four rehab appearances with the Tides.
Xavier Avery and Corban Joseph each had two hits for Norfolk, which has now dropped a season-high six consecutive contests.
The two teams wrap up their five-game series Thursday afternoon at Harbor Park, with first pitch set for 12:05. Joe Gunkel (0-1, 1.46) gets the start for Norfolk and will be opposed by right-hander Chris Beck (2-2, 5.40).
Notes: With two hits Wednesday, Xavier Avery has now hit safely in 14 of his last 16 games with an at-bat, over which he's batted .333 (18-54) with three home runs, 12 walks and seven RBI...Charlotte starter Terance Marin (2-3) earned the win despite not striking out a batter over 7.0 innings of work...Norfolk went 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position and has now hit .128 (18-141) with RISP in its 23 losses this season...Garabez Rosa singled and scored to extend his hitting streak to seven games.
