Syracuse Mets News Release
Syracuse, NY - The Syracuse Chiefs fell to the Indianapolis Indians by a score of 3-1 on Wednesday night. Indianapolis scored two runs in the eighth inning to break a 1-1 tie.
Indianapolis (16-15) scored the game's first run in the fourth inning. Syracuse (19-13) starter Aaron Laffey opened the frame by walking Jason Rogers. After a strikeout, Laffey then walked Willy Garcia to put Indians runners on first and second base. Jacob Stallings then singled to load the bases before Laffey struck out Gift Ngoepe. That brought up opposing starter Chad Kuhl, who fouled off three two-strike pitches before working a RBI walk, giving the Indians a 1-0 lead. Prior to the three-walk fourth inning, Laffey had given up no more than two walks in any of his previous outings on the year.
Kuhl kept Syracuse at bay through his six innings of work, allowing just four hits while striking out three. The Chiefs seriously threatened Kuhl just once during the outing in the fifth inning. Kuhl allowed a walk to Tony Campana and then back-to-back singles to Isaac Ballou and shortstop Trea Turner to load the bases with just one out. The rally ended when Kuhl induced a fly out from Scott Sizemore and Matt den Dekker grounded out.
Syracuse scored its first run of the game in the seventh off of Indians reliever Guido Knudson. A single from Campana and a walk to Turner put two speedy Chiefs on first and second with just one out in the inning. Sizemore then drove a single into center, which plated Campana and tied the game at 1-1. Cory Luebke then replaced Knudson on the mound, and he stopped the rally after den Dekker grounded out and Matt Skole struck out swinging.
Indianapolis took the lead back in the ensuing eighth inning. Garcia reached first base with his third hit of the game and went to second on Stallings' groundout. Ngoepe then singled to drive home Garcia, giving the Indians a 2-1 lead, with Ngoepe going to second on den Dekker's throw home. The hit was Ngoepe's first of the series. Dan Gamache followed the single by reaching on an error from Turner. The error allowed Ngoepe to score for a 3-1 Indians lead, a score which held for the remainder of the game.
Thursday night the Chiefs conclude their four-game series with the Indians. Paolo Espino is set to start for Syracuse, with Tyler Glasnow scheduled to start opposite him. First pitch is slated for 6:35.
