Indianapolis Indians News Release

SYRACUSE, NY - Chad Kuhl fired six-shutout innings for the Indianapolis Indians on Wednesday night, and after the Syracuse Chiefs tied the game in the seventh, Gift Ngoepe rescued the win with a go-ahead single. The Tribe snapped a three-game skid with the 3-1 triumph.

Kuhl lowered his earned run average to 1.10 with six innings of zeroes. While Kuhl walked a season-high three batters, he scattered four hits and left with a 1-0 lead. He helped create that advantage by working a lengthy at-bat in the fourth, and drew a bases-loaded walk.

The 1-0 advantage would not hold, as Syracuse (19-13) tied the game in the bottom of the seventh. With Tony Campana at second base, Scott Sizemore singled him home to knot the game. Cory Luebke (1-0) then entered the game with the go-ahead runner in scoring position, but he recorded the final two outs and kept the game even.

Ngoepe put the Tribe (16-15) in front for good in the top of the eighth. Willy Garcia smashed a one-out single, and advanced to second on a grounder. With two outs, Ngoepe singled to center field to drive home Garcia and give the Indians back the lead. He would score on an error later in the inning to expand the advantage to 3-1.

Luebke earned the win after getting the Tribe out of the seventh inning. Trey Haley worked a scoreless eighth, and Rob Scahill retired the side in order in the ninth for his first save of the season.

Nick Masset (0-2) pitched the eighth for Syracuse and was handed the defeat.

The Indians will look to earn a split with the Chiefs on Thursday night in the series finale. First pitch is set for 6:35 p.m., and then the Tribe will embark for the second leg of the trip against the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders.
