Toledo Mud Hens News Release
Wynton Bernard had three hits including a triple and three-run home run to help power Toledo (15-16) to a 7-5 come-from-behind victory over Louisville Wednesday night at Fifth Third Field.
Louisville struck first tonight in the top of the second inning when Steve Selsky led off with a ground ball double to the right field corner, and he eventually came around to score on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Seth Mejias-Brean making it 1-0 Bats.
Lloyd McClendon called upon Jeff Ferrell in the fourth inning (0.2 IP, 5 H, 4 ER, 0 BB, 0 SO), but his first pitch was belted by Jermaine Curtis for a line-drive home run to give the Bats a 2-0 lead. Four batters later a bases loaded wild pitch scored Scott Schebler, and then Carlos Triunfel ripped a two-run double putting Louisville ahead 5-0 in the top of the fourth.
However, a comeback was in order for the home team, and Toledo got it started in the bottom of the fourth inning when Steven Moya led off with a double and eventually scored on an Argenis Diaz groundout, cutting the Bats lead to 5-1. The Mud Hens continued to chip away in the fifth as Moya roped a single off the wall to score Miguel Gonzalez, making it a 5-2 game.
The comeback was completed in the bottom of the sixth inning, and following a Casey McGehee double, Nate Schierholtz laced his third home run of the season off the right field foul pole, making it a 5-4 game. A Jordany Valdespin walk followed by a perfectly placed fly-ball-double off the bat of Gonzalez started another one-out rally in the sixth inning. Wynton Bernard, with his third hit of the night, capped a five run inning with a towering three-run blast to left field for his first home run of the season putting the Hens up, 7-5.
Louisville's starting pitcher, A.J. Morris, went 5.1 innings giving up eight hits, five runs, walking three, and striking out five Hens. Getting the loss for the Bats was Stephen Johnson who went 2.2 innings giving up four hits, two runs, and strking out two.
Getting the win for Toledo was Angel Nesbitt, his first of the season, who pitched 2.1 scoreless innings while scattering three hits and striking out two. Starting his first game since August 14, 2015, Dustin Molleken went three innings while only allowing one hit, one earned run, and one walk. Preston Guilmet also pitched two scoreless innings while striking out two batters. Bruce Rondon came on in the ninth to earn his fourth save of the season with the final out coming on a swing and a miss of a 100 mph fastball.
Toledo is back in action tomorrow morning against Louisville with the five-game-series finale's first pitch set for 10:35 a.m. at Fifth Third Field.
