Norfolk Tides News Release
Three Charlotte pitchers held Norfolk to five hits as the Tides dropped a 4-1 decision to the Knights Friday night at Harbor Park.
Dylan Axelrod (3-1) led the Knights' charge, as he struck out five while walking three in seven innings of work. Donny Veal followed with a scoreless eighth, and Brian Bruney worked a perfect ninth to register his sixth save of the season.
The trio combined to retire each of the final 13 batters they faced.
Newcomer Lew Ford led Norfolk's offense with two hits and a walk, while Brandon Waring added a single and a run scored.
After retiring the first nine batters of the game, Tides starter Miguel Gonzalez (1-1) ran into his only trouble in the fourth inning. Greg Golson led off the frame with a double before Drew Garcia followed with a run-scoring single to right. Dan Johnson then lofted a home run into the right field bullpen, giving the Knights a 3-1 lead.
Rick Zagone was impressive in his Harbor Park debut, as he allowed two hits while striking out three over five hitless innings of relief. The 25-year-old southpaw has now thrown 11.1 shutout innings since being promoted from Class-A Frederick.
Hector Gimenez hit a solo home run off of Miguel Socolovich in the ninth inning.
The Tides will welcome in the Pawtucket Red Sox to Harbor Park on Saturday night, with first pitch slated for 7:15. Steve Johnson (1-3, 2.74) will take the hill for the Tides, with right-hander Justin Germano (4-2, 1.99) pitching for Pawtucket.
Saturday is Armed Forces Night at Harbor Park. There will be a performance by the United Sates Air Force Heritage of America Band from Joint Base Langley-Eustis, and the Navy's CHARGERS of Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron TWO SIX will be providing a flyover prior to the ceremonial first pitch. Representatives from each of the Armed Forces will present activities and displays in and around the stadium throughout the event. A Fireworks Extravaganza presented by Navy Mutual will follow the game. Gates open at 6 pm.
