Power outage and two rare plays cap off bizarre 9-8 loss to Yankees

A power outage at Fifth Third Field didn't seem to affect either team's offense as the Hens and Yankees combined for 17 runs as Toledo fell 9-8.

Steve Pearce blasted a three-run homer to left in the first inning to jump Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to quick 3-0 lead, despite a lack of electricity throughout Fifth Third Field. Ray Kruml added a solo shot in the second and Francisco Cervelli blasted a two-run home run in the third to give the Yankees a commanding early 6-0 lead. Kevin Russo added an RBI double to extend the lead to seven.

The Hens followed with a scoring streak of their own in the third, as they piled up five runs in four minutes to cut the Yankees' lead to two.

The rally started when the Hens loaded the bases with no outs and Brad Eldred drew a walk to drive in the first run. Danny Worth followed with a sacrifice fly to bring home Audy Ciriaco for the Hens second run. Yankees starter Manny Banuelos balked to bring home a run from third.

Eric Patterson followed by hitting one deep off the left-center wall and had enough wheels to make it all the way home for a two-run inside-the-park home run making it 7-5.

Scranton/Wilkes-Barre added two more runs in the fifth courtesy of a Colin Curtis single and a Darin Downs wild pitch to cap off the Yankees scoring at nine.

Ryan Strieby added to the Hens total with a two-run homer in the bottom of the seventh to make it 9-7. Jeff Frazier then doubled in the eighth and advanced on a wild pitch for Omir Santos to bring home with an RBI groundout to make it 9-8.

The highlight for the Hens defensively was a triple play turned 5-4-3 on a Francisco Cervelli ground ball in the sixth inning. Audy Ciriaco fielded the hard grounder cleanly and fired it around the diamond to force each runner out.

Fu-Te Ni started on the mound for the Hens and went three innings after surrendering seven Yankees runs on nine hits.

The Hens look to rebound with a four-game series against Syracuse starting tomorrow at Fifth Third Field. Top prospect Jacob Turner is set to make his first home start for the Hens. First pitch is at 7 p.m.
