Local Little League Fields Can Earn Facelift

May 18, 2012 - International League (IL1)
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees News Release

MOOSIC, PA - PNC Field is receiving a much-needed facelift; why shouldn't area Little League fields get one, too? The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees will kick off its new Little League Rehabilitation program 7 a.m. Tuesday at the Moosic Little League field at Michael Felter Field.

The program, dubbed SWB Yankees "Adopt a Field Program", will focus on rejuvenating area Little League fields while also providing an individualized athletic field maintenance guide for each league.

Each year, one Little League field from Lackawanna County and one Little League field from Luzerne County will be chosen to receive assorted field maintenance and repairs. For the inaugural year of the program, Moosic Little League was selected as a way to recognize the community's continued support of PNC Field and for hosting the SWB Yankees since 2007.

The SWB Yankees front office is currently in plans with Kingston/Forty Fort Little League, which was chosen at random for this year's Luzerne County league, to schedule an initial evaluation of the league's field. A date for the league's rehabilitation day is still to be determined.

According to Curt Camoni, SWB Yankees Vice President of Operations, those who maintain the Little League fields selected each year will not only receive a day of professional maintenance and guidance provided by the SWB Yankees grounds crew, but also a personalized booklet filled with detailed information and tips on how to keep the fields properly maintained each year.

"What's great about this program is that each field will receive an individualized evaluation and athletic field maintenance clinic from our Director of Field Operations. It won't be just a cookie-cutter type of program," said Camoni. "He will work with the head of each league and whoever maintains the fields to develop a long-term program that the leagues can adhere to."

Steve Horne, Director of Field operations for the SWB Yankees, will head up the program along with his crew and other front office staff members.

Horne recently met with officials from Moosic Little League and completed an initial evaluation of the field. On Tuesday, Horne and his grounds crew will rebuild Moosic Little League's pitching mound and bullpen, repair the home plate area and provide infield maintenance such as edging and leveling the playing field.

The league's maintenance guide will contain information on yearlong grass and turf care, along with other information on proper athletic field care.

"This is a great opportunity to provide those maintaining local Little League fields with the knowledge needed to maintain a safe and beautiful playing surface," Horne said. "Many leagues don't have the tools, manpower or guidance needed to keep their fields in good shape. Hopefully, after our crew comes in to help get them started, we can develop a plan that will benefit the leagues and their players for years to come."

Details on SWB Yankees' future Little League Rehabilitation programs and how leagues can submit their fields for consideration will be released at a later date.
