Norfolk Tides News Release
Dan Straily, Tayler Scott and David Hess struck out 15 while combining on a four-hit shutout to pitch the Tides past the Charlotte Knights 2-0 Saturday night at Harbor Park.
Making his first appearance with the Tides since accepting an outright assignment from Baltimore earlier in the week, Straily (1-0) spun five shutout innings in front of a season-high crowd of 9,013. Straily struck out seven without walking a batter, including punching out the side in the fourth inning. The 30-year-old right-hander allowed four hits and needed only 68 pitches to navigate his outing as he faced just four batters over the minimum.
Scott followed Straily's efforts by striking out the side in the sixth inning, his lone inning of work. Scott, claimed off of waivers from Seattle on Tuesday, threw 12 of his 18 pitches for strikes while touching 96 mph on the stadium radar gun.
Hess capped off the dominating pitching performance by striking out five over three innings of relief. Hess punched out the side in the eighth inning, then struck out the final two batters of the contest to earn his first career professional save. Over his last three outings, the 25-year-old right-hander has allowed just four hits and three walks while striking out 11 over 9.0 shutout innings of relief.
Norfolk got all the runs they would need in the second inning, when Mason Williams connected on a two-run homer down the right field line off of Kyle Kubat (1-1). It was the 10th home run of the season for Williams, who has now hit safely in six of his last seven games. The 10 home runs are just one round tripper shy of matching his career-high, an 11-homer campaign in the Yankees system in his first season of pro ball (2012).
The shutout victory was the fifth of the season for the Tides, who have now won three of their last four contests.
The two clubs will wrap up their series on Sunday afternoon at Harbor Park, with first pitch slated for 1:05. Tom Eshelman (1-1, 4.05) is scheduled to start for Norfolk and will be opposed by left-hander Hector Santiago (0-0, 1.80).
Notes: Earlier Saturday, RHP Hunter Harvey was transferred to Norfolk from Double-A Bowie, taking the roster spot of LHP Chris Lee, who was placed on the Injured List...With the addition of Harvey to the roster, there have now been 54 different players to appear on Norfolk's roster this season, and the Tides have made 52 transactions in June...The game was played in two hours and four minutes, the shortest nine-inning game the Tides have played this season...Austin Wynns singled twice and scored a run in the win.
