ROCHESTER, N.Y. - The Pawtucket Red Sox loaded the bases with nobody out in the top of the ninth inning, but the Rochester Red Wings, who had scored six runs in the eighth inning, hung on for a 9-6 win Saturday night at Frontier Field.
The PawSox (32-47) grabbed a 5-2 lead at the halfway point, but Rochester (39-40) rode its big eighth inning to the win, which evens the three-game series at a game apiece ahead of Sunday's rubber meeting.
Gorkys Hernández (2-for-5, R, HR, 3 RBI) cracked a two-run, opposite-field homer in the fifth inning - his 11th long ball of the season. Chris Owings (1-for-4, 2 R, HR, RBI) connected on his first home run since joining the Red Sox organization. Juan Centeno extended his hitting streak to five games with a 2-for-3 night. Tzu-Wei Lin (knee, shoulder), in the fourth game of his rehab assignment, served as the DH and went 0-for-2 with two walks.
PawSox starter Ryan Weber (5 IP, 2 ER, 1 BB, 7 K) turned in a second consecutive stout performance. Tyler Thornburg tossed a scoreless sixth - his second straight shutout appearance. Dan Runzler (L, 1-1) took the loss in the eighth.
Rochester reliever Carlos Torres (W, 2-0) sidestepped trouble in the ninth, and Ian Krol (S, 4) finished off the win for the Red Wings.
The PawSox now conclude their series Sunday at 1:05 p.m. at Frontier Field. PawSox left-hander Darwinzon Hernandez (0-1, 6.75 ERA) is scheduled to oppose Red Wings righty Kohl Stewart (5-3, 4.80).
