Tides Cruise Late

Norfolk Tides News Release

Norfolk used a strong start from Luis Ortiz and a six-run seventh inning to charge past the Columbus Clippers 7-1 Friday night at Harbor Park.

Making his Harbor Park debut, Ortiz (1-0) picked up his first Triple-A victory after allowing one run on three hits - all singles - over six strong innings of work. The 22-year-old, acquired from Milwaukee in a July 31st trade for infielder Jonathan Schoop, struck out three without walking a batter to help pitch the Tides to a win in the opener of a crucial three-game set. He retired the final eight batters he faced and faced just four batters over the minimum, throwing 59 of his 85 pitches for strikes.

The Tides gave Ortiz some early offense in the second frame, as Jaycob Brugman plated a pair of runs with a two-out single. Columbus pulled within a run on a sacrifice fly in the fourth frame, and the game stayed that way until Norfolk broke the game open with a huge seventh inning.

The Tides sent 10 men to the plate in the seventh frame, registering four hits and two walks while taking advantage of a crucial error. With two outs and runners on second and third, Mike Yastrzemski hit a sharp grounder that first baseman Yandy Diaz could not handle, allowing two runs to score on the miscue. Breyvic Valera, Pedro Álvarez & Chance Sisco each followed with run-scoring singles, and a wild pitch later capped the scoring as Norfolk took a 7-1 advantage.

Luis Gonzalez made the lead hold up, striking out six over 3.0 shutout innings to earn his first career Triple-A save. Gonzalez has posted a 2.40 ERA in seven outings since joining Norfolk from Double-A Bowie.

With the win, Norfolk (61-54) pulled a game ahead of Columbus (61-56) in the International League Wild Card standings. The victory also moved Norfolk a game ahead of Scranton/Wilkes-Barre (60-55) in the Wild Card standings, as the RailRiders dropped a 4-3, 10-inning decision at Durham.

The Tides and Clippers will continue their three-game set on Saturday night at Harbor Park, with first pitch scheduled for 7:05. In a battle of left-handers, Sean Gilmartin (2-0, 3.14) will make the start for Norfolk and be opposed by Adam Wilk (4-8, 4.22).

Saturday is Navy Night at Harbor Park, as the Tides will honor the brave men and women that serve in the United States Navy. Active duty and Navy veterans, as well as their dependents, can get discounted tickets at the Harbor Park box office. There will also be a postgame fireworks show presented by Navy Mutual.

Notes: Prior to Friday's game, the Orioles selected the contract of outfielder Cedric Mullins from the Tides, while Baltimore designated infielder Danny Valencia for assignment...Mullins is the 27th different player to appear on the active roster for both the Tides and Orioles this season... Pedro Álvarez now has 28 RBI in 33 games since joining Norfolk from Baltimore on June 25th...Breyvic Valera extended his hitting streak to five games with his seventh inning single...Norfolk is now 48-18 when scoring at least four runs in a game.
