Norfolk Tides News Release
Francisco Peña homered as part of a three-hit game, but the Syracuse Chiefs pounded out 12 hits and held off several Tides rallies in a 7-6 win over Norfolk Sunday afternoon at Harbor Park.
Syracuse jumped out to an early lead in the contest, as Brian Goodwin and Brandon Snyder connected on third inning home runs to give the Chiefs an early 5-0 advantage. Both of the home runs came off of Zach Stewart (0-3), who retired the first six batters he faced in a spot start before running into trouble in the third.
Norfolk rallied to within one run in the contest on three different occasions, pulling within 5-4, 6-5 and 7-6 before ultimately falling in a bid to sweep the three-game set. The final comeback effort came in the ninth, when the Tides pushed across a run against Joe Nathan before Drew Dosch grounded out to end the contest with the bases loaded.
Peña led Norfolk's 11-hit attack with a solo homer and two singles, his first three-hit game of the season. Dosch added two hits and an RBI for Norfolk, as six different Tides registered an RBI.
The setback snapped a three-game winning streak for the Tides, as they finished their homestand with a 4-3 record.
After an off day Monday, the Tides head to Charlotte Tuesday for a three-game set with the Knights. Chris Tillman is scheduled to make a rehab start in that contest and will be opposed by RHP Carson Fulmer (2-1, 3.52), with first pitch slated for 7:05.
Notes: Earlier Sunday, the Orioles recalled LHP Richard Bleier and RHP Logan Verrett from Norfolk to take the roster spots of LHP Vidal Nuño and LHP Jayson Aquino, both of whom were optioned to the Tides on Saturday...Logan Schafer drew a walk, giving him six free passes over his last three games...Johnny Giavotella reached base three times, walking twice and singling in five plate appearances...Stefan Crichton struck out three and allowed one run over 3.0 innings of relief...Former Tide Corban Joseph had four hits and an RBI for Syracuse.
