Slegers, Wings top Bats 7-1 Apr 29th 2017, 19:41, by Nick Sciarratta and Jim Erbland
Aaron Slegers allowed one unearned run in eight innings, and Tommy Field had three extra base hits to lead the Rochester Red Wings to a 7-1 win over the Louisville Bats Saturday afternoon at Frontier Field. The homestand and series conclude Sunday afternoon at 1:35 p.m.
Prior to Saturday's game, the Red Wings got off to very slow starts in the first four games of their current six game home-stand by tallying just one run in the first six innings. But the Wings got on the scoreboard early Saturday, against Bats starter Nick Routt . In the bottom of the first, Niko Goodrum hit a double off of the right-center field fence. Matt Hague followed with an RBI single to score Goodrum to give the Wings an early 1-0 advantage.
Field increased the lead to 2-0 after leading off the second inning with a home run. It was Field's third home run of the season.
The offense went right back to work in the third inning. Goodrum led off the inning reaching base on an error by Bats' second baseman Tony Renda . Goodrum promptly stole second base, followed by Hague's second single of the game. After a Daniel Palka strikeout, Mitch Garver snapped an 0-for-9 skid by ripping a double down the left field line scoring Goodrum. Field walked to load the bases, Routt threw a wild pitch to score Hague making the score 4-0. Routt's day ended after walking J.B. Shuck .
Alejandro Chacin entered the game in the third inning with the bases loaded and one out. Leonardo Reginatto greeted him with a hard hit double which scored Garver and Field. Bengie Gonzalez moved the runners over with a sac fly to center field scoring Shuck to make the score 7-0.
In his previous two starts, Routt was unable to make it past the fourth inning. Routt pitched 2.1 innings, allowing seven runs, six hits, two walks. He threw 65 pitches (35 strikes) and had two strikeouts.
Slegers made his fourth start of the season for the Wings. He ran into trouble in the fourth inning after giving up two straight singles. However, he was able to get out of the jam by inducing a double play and striking out the next batter, Rob Brantly .
Slegers worked into the eighth inning for the first time in his four starts so far this season. After giving up 21 hits over his past two starts, Slegers allowed seven hits Saturday, with an unearned run, one walk, and four strikeouts. Slegers threw 92 pitches, 61 for strikes. D.J. Baxendale worked the ninth inning for the Red Wings, setting down all three batters he faced.

1994 - Anthony Telford made a successful return to Silver Stadium, pitching four innings of relief and picking up the win as the Richmond Braves topped Rochester 5-2. Telford, who was 31-23 in three seasons with the Wings, was honored in a ceremony before the game.
1989 - It's been a rough start for the International League's newest franchise in Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. The Red Barons enter play on April 29 with a mere 5-14 record so far in their first season in the IL, having replaced the Maine Guides. Things go from bad to worse during this Saturday game at Pawtucket, as the Red Sox pound the seemingly helpless Red Barons pitching staff all night long. When the dust clears, the Red Sox have scored a franchise record 26 runs! Shortstop Luis Rivera drives in 5 of the 13 runs he chased home all season in the 26-3 thrashing. Scranton/Wilkes-Barre would finish its inaugural season with a 64-79 record, just 3.5 games better than the team with the League's worst mark...Pawtucket (62-84).
1951 - Dale Earnhardt, American race car driver... 1957 - Daniel Day-Lewis, English actor (Last of the Mohicans, Gangs of New York)... 1970 - Andre Agassi, tennis star.
1987 - Andre Dawson had five hits and hit for the cycle to lead the Chicago Cubs to an 8-4 victory over the San Francisco Giants.
1994 - Kirk Rueter of Montreal became the first major leaguer since Fernando Valenzuela in 1981 to start his career with a 10-0 record as the Expos beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 3-2.
1956 - Elvis Presley, "Heartbreak Hotel"... 1963 - Little Peggy March, "I Will Follow Him"... 1982 - Joan Jett and The Blackhearts, "I Love Rock 'n Roll"
