Norfolk Tides News Release
Gabriel Ynoa turned in a strong outing and David Washington homered as the Tides edged Syracuse 4-3 in front of 7,527 fans Saturday night at Harbor Park.
Ynoa (1-4) picked up his first win in a Norfolk uniform after allowing two runs on six hits over 6.1 innings of work - the longest outing by a Tides starter this season. The 23-year-old retired the first nine batters he faced and threw 63 of his 100 pitches for strikes, striking out four while walking one. Ynoa's effort was his first Quality Start of the season and helped lift Norfolk to its third straight victory.
Ynoa's outing continued a strong stretch for Norfolk starting pitchers, as the six different starters the Tides have used this homestand have pitched to a 1.53 ERA (5 ER, 29.1 IP) with 26 hits, 18 strikeouts and 10 walks.
Paul Fry and Jimmy Yacabonis followed Ynoa out of the bullpen, with Yacabonis retiring the final four batters of the contest to earn his fourth save of the year. Yacabonis has now opened the year with nine scoreless appearances, holding batters to an .079 average (3-38) with seven strikeouts and one walk over 11.2 innings of work.
Washington's homer was a solo shot in the sixth inning and upped his average in 12 games at Harbor Park this season to .351 (13-37). The 26-year-old first baseman has now hit safely in six of his last eight contests, over which he's hit .400 (10-25) with two home runs, three doubles and four runs batted in.
Johnny Giavotella and Chris Dickerson each had RBI singles in the win, as Norfolk won as the home team for the seventh time in its past eight contests.
The Tides will go for the three-game series sweep on Sunday, with first pitch from Harbor Park set for 1:05. Zach Stewart (0-2, 5.65) will start for Norfolk and be opposed by right-hander Greg Ross (0-1, 3.18).
On Sunday, the first 4,000 fans entering Harbor Park will receive a collectable photo of Tides catcher Chance Sisco, courtesy of Sprint and 97.3 The Eagle.
Notes: Earlier Saturday, LHP Paul Fry was activated to Norfolk's roster after being optioned from Baltimore, while LHP Andrew Faulkner was transferred to Class-A Delmarva... Logan Schafer walked twice, stole a base and scored two runs in the contest, giving him five walks over his last two games...Paul Janish singled and walked twice to up his on-base percentage to .406.
