Knights Win Friday's Suspended Game 6-3 Saturday Charlotte Gets Three Home Runs, Solid Pitching in Opener
(COLUMBUS, OH) -- A day after rain suspended the opening game of a three-game series on Friday, the Knights picked up right where they left off on Saturday.
Willy Garcia, Ryan Raburn, and Nicky Delmonico all homered to help the Charlotte Knights beat the Columbus Clippers by a score of 6-3 on Saturday from Huntington Park in Columbus, OH. Saturday's first of two games started out with the Knights already ahead by a score of 2-0 with one out in the first inning after the team got off to a quick start on Friday.
The Knights pushed their first two runs across in the top of the first inning on a two-run home run by Garcia on Friday. Minutes later, rain and lightning put the game into a delay and later suspended the opener. The two teams were forced to pick things up on Saturday at 4:05 p.m. That didn't stop the Knights from continuing their hot hitting, however.
Tied by a score of 3-3 in the sixth, Raburn put the Knights ahead with a solo home run off LHP Ryan Merritt (2-2, 4.82). The Columbus left-handed pitcher started on Saturday and allowed four runs on six hits over 6.2 innings. He pitched in relief of Friday's starter Mike Clevinger and was saddled with the loss. Garcia's two-run home run came off Clevinger on Friday.
With the Knights now ahead by a score of 4-3, Delmonico extended his hitting streak to nine games with a two-run home run off Merritt. Charlotte then took a 6-3 lead at that point and never looked back. Second baseman Yoan Moncada chipped in with a three-hit game, while Garcia led the way with the home run and three RBIs.
Charlotte LHP David Holmberg made his first start of the season and allowed three runs on eight hits over 4.2 innings. Holmberg did not factor in the decision. RHP Brad Goldberg (1-1, 1.80), an Ohio native, earned the win after 1.1 scoreless innings. LHP Matt Purke tossed two shutout innings out of the bullpen, while RHP Zack Burdi recorded the final three outs in the ninth to notch his third save of the season.
The two teams are currently playing the originally scheduled game. RHP Chris Volstad started for the Knights, while the Clippers sent RHP Carlos Frias to the mound. The game can be heard on ESPN Charlotte (730 AM) and CharlotteKnights.com.
