ThunderBolts Defeat Grizzlies in Series Opener

CRESTWOOD, Ill. - Windy City starting pitcher Daniel Cropper fired a complete game and the ThunderBolts defeated the Gateway Grizzlies 5-1 Saturday night at Standard Bank Stadium.

Cropper (6-6) allowed only three hits and one run while striking out seven batters in his second complete game of the season.

Ben Waldrip, Michael Johnson and TJ Bennett collected the Gateway (39-28) hits, which were all singles.

Windy City (25-41) scored two runs in the second inning on a wild pitch and a Mike McGuckin RBI ground out. They added two more in the third inning on a Ryan Tufts two-run single to take a 4-0 lead.

Another Gateway wild pitch scored the ThunderBolts fifth run in the fifth inning.

Gateway starting pitcher Andrew Aizenstadt (1-3) allowed all five runs on eight hits in five and a third innings. He struck out five and walked two while suffering the loss.

Grizzlies' reliever Dejai Oliver tossed two and two thirds scoreless innings while allowing just one hit.

The lone Grizzlies run scored in the seventh on a Landon Hernandez sacrifice fly that brought in Johnson.

Gateway continues their six-game road trip Sunday night at Windy City. Right-hander Aaron Newcomb (8-4) makes the series opener start for the Grizzlies. First pitch is set for 5:05.
