Washington Wild Things News Release
Washington, PA - Starting pitcher Troy Marks threw an absolute gem on Saturday night for the Washington Wild Things, presented by Washington Financial, striking out nine batters and allowing no runs en route to a 5-2 victory over the visiting Frontier Greys. Keith Picht suffered the loss.
The Wild Things gave Marks an early lead in the bottom of the first when shortstop Ryan Kresky knocked an RBI double to score center fielder Daniel Poma. Kresky later scored on a sacrifice fly by left fielder Scott Kalamar to make it 2-0. Washington increased their lead to four runs moments later thanks to a two-run bomb from first baseman Will Beckwith. Third baseman Carter Bell came across to score later in the inning, producing a quick 5-0 lead for the Wild Things and Marks.
On the mound, Marks was dominant in his third appearance for Washington. The right-hander did not allow a hit until the seventh inning when Frontier second baseman Jon Dziomba knocked a double into the outfield grass. Marks's shutout nod was broken up as well in the seventh when Dziomba plated off of an RBI single from center fielder Chris Ellison.
The Greys threatened to start a comeback in the top of the ninth inning after capitalizing on Washington's second error of the contest to put the score at 5-2, but closer Jonathan Kountis canceled all plans for an upset, giving the Wild Things their 42nd win of the 2014 season.
The Wild Things and Greys will face off in a doubleheader on Sunday, August 3 to round out their three-game series. First pitch for game one of the Sunday twinbill is scheduled for 3:05 p.m. For tickets call (724) 250-9555, stop by the box office, or visit online at www.washingtonwildthings.com.
