Crestwood, IL - The Gateway Grizzlies scorched the scoreboard for 10 runs in the 6th inning Sunday evening at Hawkinson Ford Field to snare game 1 of a three-game set against the ThunderBolts 16-7.
14 batters came to the plate in the frame and 6 smoked hits off the triumvirate of starter Mike Renery and relievers Shane Roelle and Brent Jackson. Outfielder Shawn Smarsh was 2-for-2 in the inning with a pair driven in. Smarsh, center fielder Jimmy Reiter and DH Mike Breyman all were plated twice in the frame. Phil Warren clubbed a 3-run double to cap the scoring.
The Bolts trailed in the contest early as Breyman deposited a Mike Renery pitch into left field for a 2-run homer in the first. Breyman finished4-for-4 with a couple of doubles. Ryan Sullivan also battered a round-tripper against the righty. Renery surrendered a season high 9 earned runs on 10 hits in 5 innings and two-thirds of work.
The game was 16-5 heading into the 9th and infielder Scott Vetter recorded the final three outs of the game. It was the first time all season a position player entered a game to throw. He hit one batter, catcher Whit Pierce, and K'd Brandon Averill.
The loss marks Windy City's 9th in 9 games on Sunday this season. The Bolts fell to 10-21 at Hawkinson Ford this season. Tomorrow's game begins at 7:05 as Preston Simmis (2-1, 1.83) opposes righty Nathan Roush (2-3, 4.02). The pregame show on WJOB 1230 AM originates at 6:45.
