Richmond Roosters News Release

Richmond, Indiana - The Roosters won 9-8 Sunday night over the Washington Wild Things on a walk-off homer by Mike Reese in the bottom of the tenth. The teams combined for 34 hits in the extra-inning game but Richmond came out on top to take the first game of the series.

The Wild Things scored half their scoring in the first inning. The first four batters crossed the plate as Washington netted six base hits in the inning including a three-run homer by Chris Carter. Another run was added in the fifth when Carter hit his second homer of the day.

The Roosters started to rally in their first at-bat and continued to pick away at Washington's lead by scoring at least one run in the first five innings. Nate Gravley had two RBI, including a solo home run in the first, Gerald Miller and Kiley Vaughn had RBI singles, Mike Bidwell had a run-scoring double and Kevin White had a two-run homer to right field to give the Roosters a 7-5 lead after five innings.

The Wild Things came back to tie it by getting a run in the seventh and one in the ninth. Richmond couldn't manage to get another run through nine, so the game went to extra innings. Robert Morgan scored in the top of the tenth for Washington to give the team a brief lead, but Mike Reese came through in the bottom half with a walk-off shot to right field that won it for the Roosters. Adam Varteressian (6-0) got the win while Jim Popp (2-3) lost in relief.

The Roosters and Wild Things will continue the series at McBride Stadium on Monday night at 6:35 p.m. (Indiana time). Tony Casoli (7-2, 3.12 ERA) will get the start for Richmond against J.D. Cockroft (1-3, 4.46 ERA) of Washington.
