.500 Week- Wichita continued its five-game road swing with a trip to Prescott Valley, TX for the first time since 2007-08. Thomas Beauregard got the Thunder on the board with a power-play goal midway through the second period. The Sundogs battled back and tied the game in the third sending the game into OT and eventually a shootout. Brett Hemingway continued his mastery, beating Scott Reid in round one and Wichita outscored the Sundogs 3-0 in the shootout to earn the 2-1 win. Jumping back on a bus for 17 hours, the Thunder headed to North Richland Hills, TX for two against the Brahmas. On Friday night, Wichita used a strong third period to overtake Texas, 4-3. Aaron Davis scored first for Wichita, but the Brahmas notched the next two to take a 2-1 lead. Chris Greene and R.G. Flath provided the offense for the Thunder and Wichita took the first of three-straight meetings. Flath scored twice in 1:40 for his first two-goal performance of the season. Saturday night was a different story as Texas jumped out to a 2-0 lead. Beauregard scored on a breakaway in the second period and Daniel Tetrault tallied his seventh of the season to cut the lead to one. However, the Brahmas pulled away in the final period, scoring twice including an empty-net goal and won 5-2. In the rubber match on Sunday, the Brahmas again scored two first-period goals and held onto a lead late in the contest to win the game 3-2. Despite a terrific crowd of 8,761 on-hand, the Thunder couldn't get the game-tying goal and lost for the second-straight game to Texas. Matt Robinson and Alex Bourret scored for Wichita in the third period.
SHOOTOUT STAR - Brett Hemingway continues to be Wichita's go-to-guy in the shootout. He got the call to go first on Wednesday night and didn't disappoint as he scored the game-winning goal. Hemingway now has scored five times in seven chances including four game-winners in the shootout. Two of those game-winning goals have come against Rapid City. Hemingway leads the team in shootout percentage (.714) while Matt Robinson is right behind him (.571).
BACK IN THE SADDLE- Alex Bourret returned to Wichita and received a loud ovation from the home fans on Sunday afternoon. He scored a goal in his return, giving him 40 points (14g, 26a) on the season. Bourret was called-up to Worcester of the American Hockey League on January 5th. In six games with the Sharks farm-club, he had three assists including a two-point outing against Portland on January 8th.
SILENT ASSASIN- Kevin Seibel has been a nice addition to the blue-line for the Thunder and with the absence of Andrew Martens, he has produced. In his past 10 games, Seibel has quietly recorded 11 points, which are all assists and is a +4. He had five points this past week including a three-point performance against Texas this past Friday. Seibel made a beautiful feed on Alex Bourret's goal in the third period on Sunday to get Wichita back into the game. Matt Summers also has 11 points (5g, 6a) in his last 10 games while Beauregard has 10 (6g, 4a) in that time span.
MAKING AN IMPACT- R.G. Flath had his first two-goal game of the season on Friday night and has recorded eight points (4g, 4a) in his last 10 games. His two goals were almost identical, going over the glove of Brahmas net minder Steve Silverthorn. After the game, Flath was suspended by the Central Hockey League for an apparent hit to the head on Ross Rouleau. He will miss Wednesday's game against Arizona.
FORTUNE TELLING- Wichita finished the first half of the season at 22-9-2. If the Thunder can finish the second half of the season with an identical record, it will match the same record in which the Thunder won its second CHL Championship in 1994-95, which was 44-18-4.
