Tulsa Oilers News Release
Week In Review: The Oilers just completed a stretch of five games in seven days with four of those games on the road. The week began with an afternoon contest at Allen on Martin Luther King Day in which the Oilers prevailed 5-4. Jeff Terminesi recorded three points (1 goal, 2 assists) and Sean Erickson notched the game-winning goal as Tulsa beat Allen for the fourth time in five meetings. Newly signed netminder Steve Christie stopped 37 of 41 shots to register his first win in an Oiler uniform.
The Oilers returned to home ice Tuesday to face off against Missouri. Despite putting just 19 shots on goal, the Mavericks scored early and often in a 6-2 victory. Tulsa is now 0-3 against Missouri this season.
Friday, the Oilers began their tour of Indiana in Fort Wayne for the first of back-to-back games with the Komets. David Solway and Jay Sprague tallied for Tulsa but the bounces went the way of the home side. Gerome Giudice's second period goal was disallowed after the referee ruled the puck was kicked into the net. On a 5-on-3 powerplay in the third, Michel Beausoleil rang a slap shot off the post and the Oilers failed to come up with the tying goal in a 3-2 setback.
The Oilers bounced back on Saturday night. Mike Ullrich put Tulsa out front early, Marty Standish scored shorthanded, and the Oilers held on for a hard-fought 2-1 win over the Komets. The Oilers were outshot 35-21 but Ian Keserich had one of his best outings of the season between the pipes. The Tulsa goalie made several big stops late in the game to preserve the victory and pick up his 15th win of the season.
Tulsa and Evansville clashed on Sunday in a wildly entertaining affair that featured 77 shots on goal. Fresh off the injured reserve list, rookie winger Ryan Cramer tied the game off a two-on-one rush late in the first period. Luke Lucyk put the Oilers on top 2-1 with a powerplay goal early in the second, a lead that would hold until the final minutes of regulation. Evansville's Matt Pierce swatted a rebound past Steve Christie at the 17:04 mark of the third period to send the game to overtime. With less than ten seconds remaining in the extra frame, a pass from Evansville forward Todd Robinson ricocheted in front of the Oilers net and bounced right to the waiting stick of Jake Obermeyer. The Icemen defenseman snapped the puck into the net as time expired to give Evansville an unlikely 3-2 win. Tulsa finished the weekend trip a 1-1-1 record, good for three out of a possible six points.
Slump Busters: Several Oilers saw lengthy scoring droughts come to an end last week. Forward Michel Beausoleil, who had gone without a goal since December 13, scored Monday at Allen to break out of his slump. The game against the Americans was also a productive one for Jeff Terminesi. The rookie defenseman snapped out of a six-game pointless streak by recording a goal and two helpers in the Oilers win. Mike Ullrich entered Saturday's action at Fort Wayne with no goals in his last nine games, but the Calgary native scored just 11 minutes into the first period to end his slump and regain the goal scoring lead among CHL rookies. Prior to Saturday, Tulsa goalie Ian Keserich was winless in his last three starts. Keserich stepped up when his team needed it the most with 16 of his 34 saves coming in the third period of the Oilers 2-1 win.
Turnaround For PK Unit: Through the first five games of January, the Oilers allowed eight goals on 21 opposition powerplays, but over the weekend, Tulsa's penalty killing unit answered almost every single test. In Friday and Saturday's games, the Oilers PK squad shut down all 13 Fort Wayne powerplays and veteran forward Marty Standish recorded a shorthanded goal, the Oilers third of the season. The Tulsa penalty killers were back at it on Sunday in Evansville and held the Icemen to just one powerplay goal in seven opportunities.
Count on Clarke: Rookie forward Dylan Clarke continues to be Tulsa's most consistent performer. Last week, Clarke added a goal and two assists to push his total to 39 points (15 goals, 24 assists) for the season. The Belleville, Ontario native is the top rookie scorer in the CHL and is the only Oiler averaging more than a point per game this season. Clarke, 25, also leads the team with eight multiple-point games and hasn't gone more than three games all season without recording a point.
400 For Flamminio: Saturday night in Fort Wayne, veteran defenseman Gio Flamminio played the 400th regular season game of his seven-year professional career Except for one season in the ECHL for the Mississippi Sea Wolves, Flamminio has spent his entire career in the Central Hockey League. The native of Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, started his pro career in 2005 and spent two seasons as a member of the Oklahoma City Blazers. After the brief stint in Mississippi, Flamminio landed in Rapid City where he played three productive seasons on the Rush blue line. The 27-year old helped the Rush win its first CHL championship in 2010. Flamminio, in his first season with the Oilers, has 152 career points and has played in 108 playoff games.
