Trenton Thunder News Release

(Trenton, NJ) - The Trenton Thunder (17-16) were unable to sweep the Reading Phillies (20-12), falling 7-3 on Wednesday night at Waterfront Park. Jose Gil's three hits and Melky Mesa's third homerun of the season were not enough in the loss as the Thunder fell for just the fifth time in 17 games at home this season. Despite the loss, the Thunder still picked-up the series victory after winning the first two games of the series on Monday and Tuesday.

The only offense the Thunder were able to muster against Reading starter Austin Hyatt came in the bottom of the sixth on Mesa's two-run homerun. After Jose Gil's double with two outs, the Thunder center fielder lined a pitch over the Hyundai scoreboard in right field. Mesa's third long ball moved him into a tie with Bradley Suttle and Austin Romine for the second-most on the team.

Also in the loss, the Thunder bullpen saw its consecutive scoreless innings streak snapped. From the ninth inning of May 5th's contest with Portland to the ninth inning Wednesday, the Thunder relief corps did not allow a run over 24 straight frames. Pat Venditte hurled three shutout innings, but the R-Phils plated two runs against Thunder closer Fernando Hernandez in the top of the ninth, extending their lead to 7-2.

The Thunder will welcome the Binghamton Mets to town on Thursday night at 7:05 PM to begin a four-game series. Trenton will send RHP Craig Heyer (3-2, 3.03) to the Waterfront Park mound, and Binghamton will counter with RHP Mark Cohoon (1-2, 2.70). The SBLI Pre-Game Show with Jay Burnham and Hank Fuerst begins at 6:45 PM. Tune-in to the game on 91.3 WTSR-FM and on trentonthunder.com.

Thursday will feature post-game fireworks thanks to The Intelligencer. Call the Thunder Box Office at 609-394-3300 or log on to trentonthunder.com to reserve your seats today.
