(Trenton, NJ)- Portland starting pitcher Kris Johnson went six shutout innings to lead Portland past Trenton 4-1 on Tuesday night from Waterfront Park. Portland snapped Trenton's three-game winning streak. The Thunder still lead the season-series 7-4.
Portland (45-36) jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the 1st inning off of Thunder starting pitcher George Kontos (3-8). After a single by CF Bubba Bell and walk to 2B Tony Granadillo, LF Jeff Corsaletti connected on a two-run triple to give the Sea Dogs a 2-0 lead. Portland tacked on the final run of the frame on a sacrifice fly RBI by DH Zach Daeges. In the 5th inning, Portland added a run on another sacrifice fly RBI by Daeges. Trenton (50-33) scored its lone run in the 8th inning on an error by Portland 3B Jorge Jimenez. The Thunder ended up leaving 10 men on base in the loss. Thunder 2B Reegie Corona and SS Ramiro Pena each had two hits in the loss for Trenton.
Johnson (7-3) scattered six hits and struck out three, without walking a batter in six innings. He has not allowed a run in his last three starts, and has won his last four starts. Portland reliever Beau Vaughn picked up his 10th save for the Sea Dogs by tossing a scoreless ninth inning. 3B Carlos Mendoza and RF Jose Tabata each left the game because of injuries for Trenton. Kontos gave up 4 H and 4 R (3 ER) in 5 IP. Thunder relievers Zach Kroenke and Eric Wordekemper combined to pitch four scoreless innings of relief.
Trenton will look to bounce back on Wednesday night in the third game of the four-game series at Waterfront Park. Game time is set for 7:05 PM. LHP Chase Wright (6-1, 2.59) will start for Trenton against Portland RHP Kyle Jackson (4-1, 4.82).
