New Hampshire Fisher Cats News Release
Norwich, CT- New Hampshire Fisher Cats pitchers Brandon Magee and Kenny Rodriguez each pitched complete games at Dodd Stadium on Tuesday night, but the Connecticut Defenders captured a doubleheader sweep by scores of 2-1 and 3-0 before a crowd of 2,099.
Connecticut (40-43) took game one in walk-off fashion when Olmo Rosario (2-for-3, 2B, RBI) scored pinch-runner Antoan Richardson from third base with an infield single in the bottom of the seventh inning, lifting the Defenders to a 2-1 victory.
Carlos Sosa led off the inning with a single off Magee. After Simon Klink sacrificed Sosa to second base, Richardson pinch ran and stole third. Rosario's sharp grounder bounced off third baseman Anthony Hatch's glove, allowing Richardson (SB, R) to race home with the winning run.
Magee (1-11) suffered the tough-luck defeat. The right-hander went the distance, allowing two runs on eight hits in 6.1 innings. He struck out one and walked three.
Garrett Broshuis (7-6) earned the complete-game victory, beating the Fisher Cats for the third time this season. Broshuis scattered four hits, struck out three and walked one.
New Hampshire (32-51) grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning. With two outs, Broshuis hit Chris Gutierrez (0-for-1, HBP, R) with a pitch. Scott Campbell (1-for-3) lined a single up the middle, and Eric Nielsen (2-for-2, RBI, BB) singled to left field, scoring Gutierrez.
The Defenders tied the game, 1-1, in the bottom of the fifth inning against Magee. Sosa (2-for-3, 2B, R) led off with a double to left field and scored when Klink (1-for-3, RBI, SAC) grounded a single to left.
In the nightcap, Adam Witter (1-for-3, 3B, 3 RBI) belted a three-run triple off Kenny Rodriguez in the bottom of the third inning, scoring Jake Wald (walk), Antoan Richardson (single) and Pablo Sandoval (walk) to give the Defenders a 3-0 lead.
That was plenty for winning pitcher Brooks McNiven (2-1), who worked five shutout innings. The right-hander yielded six hits -all singles- and struck out two.
Jason Waddell pitched a scoreless sixth, and Kelvin Pichardo earned his fourth save by pitching one scoreless inning.
Rodriguez (0-1), in his Eastern League debut, surrendered three runs on three hits in the complete-game effort. He walked five and was called for two balks. Manager Gary Cathcart was ejected by homeplate umpire Mark Buchanan for arguing the second balk in the bottom of the fourth inning.
The Fisher Cats send left-hander Ricky Romero (4-4, 5.99) to the mound on Wednesday night at 6:35pm against Defenders' right-hander Joey Martinez (4-6, 2.15) at Dodd Stadium. Radio coverage begins at 6:15pm on the WGIR Fisher Cats Radio Network with Mike Murphy.
