Connecticut Defenders News Release

NORWICH, CT- For the second time in about a week, the Connecticut Defenders are sending a pitcher straight from Norwich to San Francisco. The Giants announced Tuesday that the newest Giant would be right-handed reliever, Osiris Matos.

Matos, 23, a native of the Dominican Republic, was having an outstanding season for the Connecticut Defenders. In 36.2 innings spread over 27 appearances, Matos posted a 1.23 ERA, gave up just 25 hits, walked 11 and fanned 37. Opponents posted just a .191 average against him as Matos saved eight games in nine opportunities.

Matos had moved into the closing role on a part-time basis in situations where everyday closer Sergio Romo had accumulated too much work over too short a time span. Once Romo got the promotion to San Francisco on June 24, Matos took over the finishing duties for Connecticut. Osiris put the lid on the Fisher Cats in last night's 1-0 win by retiring New Hampshire in order with a strike out.

Matos has been a part of the big league 40-man roster for the past few seasons but has yet had a chance to shine on the largest of stages.
