Binghamton Rumble Ponies News Release

Jose Sanchez struck out six over six shutout innings, helping the Binghamton Mets defeat the Altoona Curve 5-2 at Blair County Ballpark Tuesday. The win is Binghamton's second straight and 23rd in their last 32 games.

Binghamton (47-36) didn't trail after the first, when Fernando Martinez and Nick Evans opened the inning with back-to-back singles off Derek Hankins before Daniel Murphy's sacrifice fly brought in Martinez.

The B-Mets added two more in the second. Hankins (1-5) began the frame by walking Mike Carp, who moved to third on Salomon Manriquez's double. Carp scored on Emmanuel Garcia's sacrifice fly. Jose Coronado followed with a single before Martinez walked, loading the bases for Evans, who hit into a fielder's choice that scored Manriquez for a 3-0 B-Mets lead.

In the seventh, Murphy walked and Caleb Stewart singled him to third before the pair executed a double steal, with Murphy swiping home. Carp singled in the ninth and moved to second on a walk to Manriquez before Coronado's single scored him for a 5-0 advantage.

Altoona (35-47) got two runs back in the bottom of the ninth on James Boone's single off Joe Hietpas. However, Eddie Kunz got the final three outs for his 22nd save in 25 chances.

Wednesday, the Binghamton Mets play the third game of a four-game series against the Altoona Curve. Lefty Jonathon Niese (5-5, 3.14) will start for Binghamton against Yoslan Herrera (4-7, 3.12) of Altoona. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. at Blair County Ballpark with the radio broadcast beginning at 6:50 p.m. on Newsradio 1290 WNBF.

Notes: Portland beat Trenton, putting the B-Mets three games behind the first-place Thunder...Binghamton is a season-high 11 games over .500, the first time they've reached that milestone since 2004, when they were as many as 23 games over .500...Kunz has saved five of Binghamton's last six wins...the B-Mets picked up their second steal of home in less than a week (Eric Reed, Wed. vs. ALT)...Murphy was playing in his first game back with Binghamton since returning from the Disabled List.
