Trenton Thunder News Release
Richmond, VA- The Thunder bullpen surrendered six runs in the eighth inning, and the Flying Squirrels held on to defeat Trenton 8-3 on Tuesday night at The Diamond. With the loss, the Thunder fall to 57-39 on the year.
RHP Felix Romero made his eighth career appearance and first start against the Thunder. In the second inning, Edwar Gonzalez poked a solo home run over the right-center field wall to give Trenton an early 1-0 lead. Richmond answered back in the home half of the third against RHP Hector Noesi, as Clay Timpner led off with a single to right field. After a ground out by Tyler La Torre, Noesi was taken deep on a two-run homer from Sharlon Schoop to put Richmond ahead 2-1.
The Thunder tied the game in the seventh inning after Daniel Brewer reached on an error and then scored on an RBI triple by Matt Cusick. In the top of the eighth inning, Justin Snyder led off with a double off the right field wall, forcing a pitching change. After a ground out moved Snyder to third base, RHP Daniel Turpen (5-5) intentionally walked Brandon Laird to put runners at the corners. With Brewer up, Turpen was able to pick off Laird at first, but Snyder raced in from third in the process to score the go-ahead run and give Trenton a 3-2 lead.
Noesi finished the night after giving up two runs on four hits and struck out four in seven innings pitched. Kevin Whelan (1-3) came in to pitch the bottom of the eighth inning and walked three of the five batters he faced, including walking in the tying run. He was removed for Wilkin de la Rosa, who surrendered four hits, including a three-run triple by Ryan Lormand. In total, Richmond scored six runs on six hits in the inning. The Thunder went down in order in the top of the ninth inning to end the game.
Gonzalez was the only Trenton hitter with a multi-hit game. Rain delayed the start of the game by 34 minutes.
Trenton and Richmond conclude their series on Wednesday afternoon starting at 12:05 PM. RHP Andrew Brackman makes the start for the Thunder, and Richmond will start RHP David Mixon. Catch all the action on 107.7 FM The Bronc or at
